Wednesday, I attended a very insightful Off-Highway conference at Autoworld Brussels. The venue was in retrospect very symbolic, in an internal combustion (IC) engine vehicle focused museum I spotted two BEV’s (1899 car/1941 motorbike). We sometimes forget that electric vehicles are not “new”, but neither are the hurdles: high cost / limited autonomy / charging infrastructure. Early 20th century the development of the electric starter paved the way for IC supremacy. Fast forward, while we struggle (again) with the E-hurdles we now have the climate change context driving a sense of urgency. New goals and timelines are set, but what about taking steps now? Europe imposed the manufacturing of StageV -the cleanest diesel technology available at this moment- compliant units on the OEMs, but not the use. Given the sense of urgency, why not incentivize a phase-out of less Stage models? Not all companies have the capital to join the E-forerunners league. With the right support the industry could already make an effective emission reduction impact now, replacing older units with StageV compliant models. #offhighwayconference #stageV #emissionreduction #rotair
