We came across this resource today and appreciate Coralus and Criterion Institute for presenting this thoughtful reflection on sharing power. Thrive Impact Fund was founded and led by non-profit leaders. After decades of leading organizations and working to raise resources, we got exhausted by the deep power imbalance within the sector between funders and non-profits, and the lack of access to capital. Thrive Impact Fund is working to remove barriers to capital, and yet we are learning so much about how the financial system itself is designed to consolidate resources and power. All to say, it takes time to learn a new system before we can work to change it-- we are learning and learning fast. Resources like this offer great grounding and examples on sharing power.

'Creating a sense of community and cohesion has fallen disproportionately on the shoulders of local businesses. We need them more than ever to fill a hole that has been created by decades of creeping social atomisation.' 📰 Did you read Julian Baggini's article in the Financial Times? We know community businesses provide spaces in which people can meet, mix, & connect. This builds social capital - and more prosperous, connected areas where people feel rooted in their community. To see more of them, we're calling for: ⚖️ Powers - via a Community Power Act 💳 Resources - via expanding the community ownership fund & setting up a British high street investment vehicle 📉 Backing - through a 75% business rates relief for community businesses. "Let’s get these loans to these governments, to these nations, so they can build houses and make their communities healthier - then the next generation can have better opportunities to thrive." Tracee Smith, our founder and CEO, sat down with Steven Vanloffeld at The Indigenist, to discuss the road to Keewaywin’s founding, why we need private credit to address the Indigenous housing crisis, how the fund works, and Tracee’s advice to her fellow Indigenous entrepreneurs. Incredible stuff here from the Less Talk More Action team at BlocPower... We don't just talk about the need to train workers for the clean energy transition and how that training should be focused on marginalized communities, we DO IT! Proud of my colleagues and the incredible cohort assembled to create and implement a groundbreaking workforce development program in partnership with Boston nonprofit, Browning the Green Space. Upcoming webinar (in Hebrew): “Exploring North Carolina's potential as a strategic corridor for BIRD Foundation" — I’d say it is going to be excellent, but was asked to join the panel so now… well, don’t say I didn’t warn you that you’ll get a dose of humor and out-of-the-box thinking about the value of NC & Israel collaboration, along with the serious information from the BIRD representatives. Join us if you dare! PS/For those of you who are not familiar with the BIRD Foundation, it is a good purpose federal organization that encourages collaborations between US and Israeli companies. The foundation has been around for 44 years now and provides non-equity grants of up to $1.5M to cover up to 50% of the cost of a joint R&D project. The foundation promotes collaborations in virtually every area that can show significant innovation and demonstrate commercial potential. It also provides matchmaking support between U.S. and Israeli companies. If you are interested in applying, please contact me or any member of the BIRD team. #northcarolina #rnd #BIRDHLS #homelandsecurity #DHS #firstresponders #publicsafety #US_Israel #collaboration #IsraelTech #partnership #threatdetection https://lnkd.in/eBfuVZyg

Interested in community development finance? Take a look at Pacific Community Ventures (PCV) new place-based guide to investing in underserved businesses and communities. It’s flows from PCV's experience with the Oakland Fund, a restorative loan fund launched during the pandemic to provide patient, affordable capital to small businesses in Oakland, Calif.—particularly businesses led by and serving people of color, which have not historically had equitable access to financing. C3 is proud to have helped fund development of the report as part of our Fostering Solutions and Infrastructure (FSI) work to expand the use of catalytic capital. The playbook includes a range of resources, including case studies, narrative storytelling and guiding questions to help others develop and implement place-based lending programs. Download the playbook: https://lnkd.in/gcpVqaYQ Learn more about C3's FSI grantees: https://lnkd.in/gUDU4VSe #CDFIs #communitydevelopment #smallbusiness #catalyticcapital #socialinvestment #impactinvesting #wealthgap
The PCV Oakland Fund exemplifies the principles of Beloved Community by offering a framework for restorative capital that dismantles barriers to investment and moves toward a more equitable future. In 2021, as crucial pandemic recovery programs began to sunset, Pacific Community Ventures and our partners applied a place-based approach to supporting Oakland's underestimated entrepreneurs in historically redlined communities. The Oakland Fund Playbook provides best practices and resources to support CDFIs and other financial institutions in upholding a commitment to Civil Rights. We hope to inspire more impact investors to pursue community-centered and co-created approaches as a tool to help historically redlined communities stay in place and thrive again.
