And how to maintain it?’’ • 1/3 As team physician at Almere City FC, these are questions that intrigue me and that I think about a lot. I consistently explore the factors essential for establishing and maintaining a successful, high-performing sports medicine staff. Over the next weeks, I'll be distilling insights from various scientific articles (Fu 2007; Dijkstra 2014; Gabbett 2017) and sharing my pivotal takeaways with you. This week, I'll focus on three crucial success elements, demanding out-of-the-box thinking within our high-performance environment: ✅ Supporting athletes and coaches. The sports medicine staff are there to support athletes and coaches, not vice versa. ✅ Embracing diversity. Diversity should be considered a strength. Seeking feedback from individuals with different perspectives and skill sets may ultimately lead to a better outcome. ✅ Beyond textbook skills. Sports medicine staff require a greater skill set than what can be learned from a textbook. They must be emotionally aware, have attention to detail and create an environment that allows the sport coaches to do their job. 3/3 ‘’How to create a successful and well functioning sports medicine staff? In my role as Team Physician at Almere City FC, these are the questions that continually captivate my thoughts. Following last weeks, I will share my last (key) take-aways with you from three scientific articles (Fu 2007; Dijkstra 2014; Gabbett 2017). This week, I'm delving into three pivotal elements: communication and fostering a robust team culture: ✅ Communication. The essential component to sustaining a winning team is communication. Maintain open communication pathways within the sports medicine team and emphasise strong working relationships between medical staff and coaches. ✅ Regular Multidisciplinary Evaluations. Conduct regular multidisciplinary athlete (injury) evaluation sessions for team efficiency and optimal care of athletes. ✅ Culture of Trust and Collaboration. Cultivate trust, confidence, and a culture of collaboration within the team. No individual is more important than the whole and each individual relies on another to successfully perform their role. Reducing their role to "glorified personal training" not only mischaracterises their profession but also disregards their vital contributions. The challenges faced in gaining professional recognition shouldn't overshadow the collaborative potential between physiotherapists and exercise physiologists. The document's attempt to downplay exercise physiologists as "unregistered" is misleading; they adhere to standards through their governing body, Exercise and Sports Science Australia. Emphasising evidence-based practice, staying within professional scopes, and fostering collaboration isn't a mere suggestion; it's essential for optimal patient outcomes. Let's redirect our focus towards acknowledging the profound impact exercise physiologists have on healthcare and dispel these damaging misconceptions. It's time for a factual and respectful recognition of the valuable role exercise physiologists play in promoting holistic health.
