As divorce professionals, I know you often hear more of the emotional side of a client's divorce than is actually necessary. So often they feel like they don't have someone to talk to who understands, and because you are part of the ins and outs of their divorce process, you become that shoulder to lean on. I have seen how this can complicate your ability to do what they are actually paying you for--and it's not to be a therapist. I have created a virtual space where divorced parents can come together over coffee to find support and understanding. Every 3rd Monday I gather with divorced parents for an enriching discussion on divorce, parenting, and co-parenting, facilitated by someone who understands the journey firsthand (ME!). Divorce season. Yes that's true and no I am not promoting it. January is statistically, the start of divorce season. Perhaps it was the culmination of that final holiday, the one that pushed you over the edge. Or maybe it stems from the desire for a fresh start, a newfound resolution to seek a better life. Regardless of the catalyst, navigating the aftermath can prove treacherous, especially when it comes to financial matters. Far too often, I witness countless women relinquishing more assets than they rightfully should, driven by the urgency to sever ties swiftly. It is a delicate dance, this journey of moving forward. So try to lighten the load somewhat. Divorce is an emotional rollercoaster, but if you are dealing with a narcissistic spouse, it can make for an even bumpier ride. Narcissists use many tactics during the divorce process to get what they want. 👀 Be on the lookout for these narcissistic red flags so you can safeguard yourself and your children: 🚩 Financial abuse: many narcissists will keep control over all finances so that their spouse will feel like they can’t afford a divorce. 🚩 Using children as pawns: narcissists will not hesitate to use their children as bargaining chips during the divorce to manipulate their spouse to make certain decisions. 🚩 Gaslighting: A common tactic, narcissists sow doubt in their spouse's judgment, undermining their confidence and perpetuating manipulation. 🚩 Denial: Many narcissists prolong the divorce proceedings to maintain dominance, delaying resolution and perpetuating emotional turmoil.

Children most negatively impacted by divorce are…. Adults. When I was in the long and drawn out process of separating from my ex I researched and researched how to minimise the impact on my kids. 🤯 According to a few articles (I can’t find the reference but will add to the comments when I do 🫣) the children most impacted by divorce are those that are adults! This surprised me, but it makes sense. When parents of adult children divorce it can make them question their entire belief system around marriage and relationships. It can make them question their childhood, their memories, their parents love… Yet how many people stay together ‘for the sake of the kids’? 🧑🧑🧒🧒 So let’s dig a little deeper. The real impact on kids is conflict. ☢️ Divorce or no divorce. How you communicate (not just the words you say) around your kids absolutely has the biggest impact. The facial expressions, the tension, the energy shift, the silences… they speak VOLUMES! [sic]” Hundreds of divorced redditors wrote about their relationships, describing the exact moment when they knew their marriages were over. It’s an interesting look at the many paths an unhappy relationship can take, and — unsurprisingly — the whole thing is kind of depressing. Divorce is a common thing in the United States (though recent reports suggest that the divorce rate is actually declining), and the guys in the Reddit thread share a number of common reasons for the breakdowns of their relationships, including infidelity, financial incompatibility, and simply growing apart. There’s a fair amount of anger in this thread, which makes sense. People don’t get divorced when they are in happy, functional relationships.
