Meet Ana Aragón González from Nuffield Department of Clinical Neurosciences, University of Oxford. Ana is working as a postdoctoral scientist at the Tofaris Lab. Ana's research focuses on using human stem cells to model dopaminergic neurons and other cell types involved in Parkinson's disease. With CRISPR, Ana is able to deactivate genes in their models. In Tofaris' lab, the researchers focus on studying the cellular trafficking and aggregation of α-synuclein. To identify modifiers of its turnover and aggregation related to their target genes, Ana uses various biochemical and microscopy techniques. Unlocking the Secrets of Junk DNA with AI for Cancer Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have made a significant breakthrough in cancer research by analyzing the so-called "dark genome" or "junk DNA," which constitutes almost half of the human genome. Their work, employing artificial intelligence, specifically a machine learning technique called Artemis, uncovered that sequences of repeat DNA elements, previously disregarded, play a crucial role in tumor development. By examining over 1,200 types of these repeat DNA elements in 736 cancer-linked genes, they discovered these sequences were 15 times more prevalent in cancerous tissues than expected, suggesting they could serve as markers for cancer. This innovative approach not only promises to enhance cancer detection, monitoring, and treatment but also has the potential to revolutionize the understanding and management of other diseases, such as depression, by identifying genetic markers that could lead to early diagnosis and targeted therapies.
