While it's been a few years ( 😉 ) since I've operated a business, I was recently asked by some leaders from powerhouse brands if I had any advice on navigating the rather daunting, and unpredictable industry right now.
My answer was fairly simple: Don't get bogged down by all of the complexities, but rather focus on the basics; always through the lens of the customer. The right product, at the right price, in the right location at the right time is a timeless formula to follow, and let technology be the enabler.
Here's my short list I shared with them that served me well over time: (I am sure I'm forgetting some things, please feel free to add to my list!)
📌 Play offense, not defense. Decide what you are going to stand for, and do just that. You cannot be all things to all people.
📌 Don't chase the competition. That will be a race to the bottom for someone.
📌 Stay true to your brand DNA, and your customers. Customers will be loyal and shop with you if you are consistent, transparent, authentic and have what they want and need.
📌 Focus on delivering an exceptional customer experience in every channel, and across all touch points. That includes everything from discovery to unboxing and beyond. Communication and convenience are key throughout.
📌 Look at all of your expenses with laser focus. If it doesn't impact the customer, reconsider its necessity.
📌 Reassess pricing strategies, leverage AI insights, and remember: your first markdown is your least expensive.
📌 Take care of your team. They are your backbone. Make sure they feel valued.
In these challenging times, collaboration matters more than ever. We all have insights and strategies that have helped us survive and thrive. If you've tried something and found success, please share!
