Today our colleagues Inès Boursot, Burak Dermenci and Pavlo Ivanchenko from the BIC - Battery Innovation Centre team at Vrije Universiteit Brussel, and Rebecca Hueting from Deep Blue are attending the joint final event from HIDDEN Project and BAT4EVER EU Project projects. BIC currently coordinates both BATMACHINE - greener EU battery cell manufacturing and PHOENIX Smart Batteries project, with Deep Blue as Communication and Dissemination partner. Thanks to such events, participants have the opportunity to get key results and recommendations as inheritance for further #research and achievements in terms of #selfhealing batteries and #energy storage. The main objective of all these projects is that of increasing #durability, #safety, #recyclability and #sustainability of future # batteries, while decreasing pressure over raw materials extraction, as also stated in the #Battery2030 Roadmap. 🌞 Back from the summer and thrilled to share the exciting fundraising of Carbyon!   💚 Carbyon has just closed a €15.3M Series A alongside Next47 / Siemens Financial Services, Lowercarbon Capital, Innovation Industries, Global Cleantech Capital, and Invest-NL to accelerate its mission of making large-scale carbon capture a reality. This milestone brings the company's total funding to over €25M, positioning it to advance the development of its ultra-fast, cost-effective Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology.   🌱 The DAC market is poised for exponential growth, being identified by the IPCC as one of the key solutions to fight climate change in the decades to come. After spending almost 2 years analyzing the space with Renaud POULARD and Paul Maurens, we believe Carbyon stands out with its exceptionally strong science-based technology and a unique capacity for large-scale industrialization. Leveraging a groundbreaking fast-swing sorbent developed through many years of R&D (notably in collaboration with TNO and ASML), Carbyon’s next-gen approach has the potential to finally make DAC an economic reality. Indeed, thanks to its high capture density and fast operation speed, this technology is set to decrease the cost of carbon capture by a factor of ten, making a substantial contribution to global decarbonization efforts.   🔬 Carbyon’s innovative approach not only boasts significant CAPEX advantages but also offers high operational efficiency. The company’s technology could achieve capture costs as low as €25 per ton at scale—making it by far the most cost-efficient solution available today. Phlair, previously known as Carbon Atlantis, is advancing its carbon capture technology designed to eliminate unavoidable CO₂ emissions. The company has successfully secured €14.5 million in a seed funding round, aimed at expanding its operations and enhancing its Direct Air Capture (DAC) technology. This investment will expedite the creation of two pioneering plants, Electra 01 and Electra 02, each designed to capture 260 tons of CO2 per year. Additionally, it sets the groundwork for Phlair's first major commercial facility, Dawn, which aims to capture over 20,000 tons of CO2 annually and is expected to commence operations in 2026. Phlair's innovation uses standard components and is powered by electricity for its CO₂ capture system, enabling rapid scalability and high durability. It features built-in energy storage, removing the need for costly batteries. Partners use the captured CO₂ for permanent storage or to create CO2-negative chemicals. Extantia Capital led the financing round, joined by Planet A and Verve Ventures, which includes a €2.5 million grant from the EIC accelerator. Existing investors Atlantic Labs, Counteract, and UnternehmerTUM Funding for Innovators also took part, and the round was oversubscribed. Malte Feucht, Phlair founder & CEO, said, “Our DAC system is purposefully designed for mass manufacturing. Combining our manufacturability with rapid execution, we are able to start addressing the world’s urgent need for scalable DAC solutions and deliver meaningful volumes. Affordable carbon capture can’t wait! 💨 That’s why I am personally hugely excited that we at Planet A Ventures have made our first investment in direct air capture (DAC). We’ve long been excited by #DAC’s potential and looking for solutions that address key scaling challenges - principally cost. Phlair’s solution crushes the cost curve under the golden threshold of $100/t CO₂ at which this tech can viably start to scale. It’s hard to overstate how exciting this is. I couldn’t be a bigger believer in this technology, but even more important in Malte Feucht, Paul Teufel and Steffen Garbe’s ability to harness its potential to drive massive impact. Meet Prof. Bantval Jayant Baliga: The Innovator Behind IGBT, Powering the Global Green Revolution 🔴Professor Bantval Jayant Baliga of North Carolina State University is the inventor, developer, and commercializer of the Insulated Gate Bipolar Transistor (IGBT). 🔴The IGBT has enabled the global green transition by making electrification and the use of renewable energy efficient and profitable. 🔴Since its development in the 1980s, the IGBT has been the most important semiconductor device for making electrical energy use and petrol consumption more efficient and less polluting. 🔴Over the past 30 years, the IGBT has reduced global carbon dioxide emissions by over 82 gigatons (180 trillion pounds). 🔴This reduction is equivalent to offsetting carbon dioxide emissions from all human activity for three years, based on the average of the past 30 years. 🔴The IGBT is used globally in applications such as: 📍Wind and solar power installations 📍Electric and hybrid-electric cars 📍Medical diagnostic machines (X-Ray, CAT scanners, MRI units) 📍Microwave ovens and induction stoves 📍Air-conditioning and refrigeration 📍Portable defibrillators 📍IGBT-based power converters and inverters dominate nearly every major application with a power rating between 1kW and 10MW in green hydrogen production. 🔴Professor Baliga is the winner of the 2024 Millennium Technology Prize, recognizing his contribution to global sustainability and the green energy revolution. #Innovation #IGBT #GreenHydrogen #GreenEnergy #Sustainability #GlobalTransition #CleanTech #ClimateAction #CO2Reduction #RenewableEnergy #TechForGood #IITM https://lnkd.in/g4PtfAfW

🌍 Transforming CO2 for a Sustainable Future 🌍 GETCO2 is leading the charge in making Australia a global leader in the electrochemical transformation of CO2. This $45M, 7-year collaboration funded by ARC Centre of Excellence for Green Electrochemical Transformation of Carbon Dioxide (GETCO2) , universities, industry, and government partners aims to create jobs, grow a sustainable economy, and accelerate our progress towards net zero. Led by Prof. Xiwang Zhang at the The University of Queensland Dr. Eloise Larsen, the project brings together 74 individuals and 19 universities and partner institutions. Our own Dr. Bernt Johannessen and the X-ray Absorption Spectroscopy (XAS) Beamline at ANSTO are integral to these efforts, providing crucial insights into advanced catalytic systems. With groundbreaking research already underway, including the development of a carbon-negative nano-generator, GETCO2 is poised to drive significant advancements in carbon capture and conversion. Prof. Karen Wilson (Griffith University) and Prof. Debra Bernhardt (University of Queensland) are also key contributors to this transformative research.
