For anyone dealing with the pain of not just death, but the death of that person who was the most important person in your life, and you could not imagine living without, I was there 24 years ago today (March 12, 2000). Take one second, one minute, one hour and one day at a time and keep moving forward. My mother gave birth to me in the Bronx in October 1970. When my mother died on March 12, 2000, I was an English teacher working in the Bronx. In 2006 I became the principal of Bronx Engineering and Technology Academy (BETA). In March 2011, I left BETA to become the founding principal of Pathways in Technology Early College High School (P-TECH). I helped design the model as we prepared for a September 2011 opening. The NYC P-TECH Grades 9-14 high school model is a multifaceted approach that represents a contemporary vision for career and technical education. It is a hybrid model, combining elements of several other models that have produced strong impacts, including New York City’s Small Schools of Choice, Career Academies, and Early College High Schools. P-TECH is a public-private partnership of the NYC Department of Education, the The City University of New York, the City Tech, CUNY, and IBM to develop a new approach to secondary and postsecondary education. The October 2023 MDRC report indicate that the P-TECH model increased students' postsecondary degree completion, particularly for male students, and boosted internship and dual enrollment rates, even during the pandemic. The P-TECH model is currently replicated in 28 countries and the state of Texas has more than 200 P-TECH programs. CUNY and Urban Assembly Secondary Schools P-TECH's curriculum includes early college and early industry preparation. 2019 - July 15, 2019, National Principal Leadership Summer Institute the theme was Revamping Up for the Next Decade. "We were not prepared for 2000. Are we better prepared for 2020? MDRC Rachel Rosen (Thank You All) the report highlights the latest results from MDRC’s random assignment evaluation of the first seven P-TECH Grades 9-14 schools in NYC. The P-TECH model offers accelerated high school course work, early college through partnerships with CUNY campuses, and work-based learning experiences with industry partners. This report provides three years of post-high school follow-up, including during the pandemic.   Earlier reports from the study showed that P-TECH students earned more credits, passed more Regents exams, and were much more likely to take college courses and earn college credits in high school than comparison group students.   The new results include:   P-TECH increased postsecondary degree completion: By the end of three years of postsecondary education, 13 percent of students in the P-TECH 9-14 group had completed postsecondary degrees, compared with 8 percent of the students in the comparison group.   P-TECH had large effects on postsecondary degree completion for male students: The overall impact on degree completion is driven by P-TECH’s effects for young men. Seven years after entering high school, 13 percent of male students in the P-TECH 9-14 group and only 3 percent of male students in the comparison group had earned a college degree.   ·       During the pandemic, P-TECH still boosted internship and dual enrollment rates—although the impacts on these outcomes were larger for students who attended high school before the pandemic.   Finally, the study shows that P-TECH schools responded to students’ preferences. All P-TECH 9-14 schools provide opportunities for students to engage in college classes, career exploration, and work-based learning.
