Cannabis stocks have had a rip-roaring year so far. My Cabot Cannabis Investor portfolio is up 33.4%. That’s more than eight times the 3.8% gain for the S&P 500. The broader cannabis sector has done well too, but not quite as well as my Cabot Cannabis Investor portfolio of the twelve best names in the space. The New Cannabis Ventures Global Cannabis Stock Index and the ETFMG Alternative Harvest ETF (MJ) are up 14%. I’m up more than twice as much. Below is a comparison of the eight US operators that generated positive tax-adjusted OCF in 2022 versus the US cannabis MSOS ETF. YTD, an equally weighted portfolio of Green Thumb Industries (GTI), MariMed, Inc., Schwazze, Vext Science, Planet 13 Holdings, Inc. (CSE: PLTH / OTC: PLNHF), Trulieve, Grown Rogue, and C21 Investments Inc. is -2.08%, versus -25.32% for MSOS. This basket is still down a couple of points, but the 23% outperformance shows that the market is rewarding companies that can generate operational cash flow after paying their taxes. Note I added a 0.75% management fee to the cash flow portfolio to make it equal to MSOS.
