A few weeks ago, HBA Central New Jersey and Bristol Myers Squibb held a networking and fireside chat event with BMS's Adam Lenkowsky, Chief Commercialization Officer, and Wendy Short Bartie, SVP of U.S. Oncology and Hematology, where they discussed creating a culture of advocacy, inclusion and growth at BMS’s Princeton Pike location. ...Carvykti’s expanded approval in April was based on the same study that showed the treatment staved off disease progression in multiple myeloma patients who received at least one prior line of therapy. Alles had been chairing the board at TORL Biotherapeutics, an antibody maker from UCLA’s Dennis Slamon, and will now pace the sidelines as CEO of the company. Since the Celgene buyout, Alles has shown up occasionally in Peer Review by taking board appointments, including the role of chairman at AI Proteins, Wugen and Turning Point Therapeutics, which also caught the eye of Bristol Myers. Looking to cash in on the antibody-drug conjugate craze, TORL launched last April and nabbed $158 million in Series B financing. Tony Johnson → Former Goldfinch Bio CEO Tony Johnson has taken over for Pascal Neuville at GPCR biotech Domain Therapeutics. Johnson told Endpoints News in January 2023 that Goldfinch had to shut down because of “fundraising challenges in the current macro-environment,” and it joined Ambys Medicines, Rheos Medicines and Cedilla Therapeutics in the group of Third Rock-backed companies to close its doors in the past 18 months. A Bristol Myers and GSK vet, Johnson was named CEO at Goldfinch in 2017 following a stint at AstraZeneca as head of early clinical development for the Innovative Medicines and Early Development unit. Domain also appointed Renogenyx CEO and ex-Point Biopharma commercial chief Michael Gottlieb as chairman. Brian Foard → Sanofi has promoted one of its own to replace Bill Sibold as head of the French pharma’s specialty care global business unit. The development of Avastin by Genentech exemplifies the debate between shareholder value and societal contribution. Intravitreal Avastin is the only exponential #innovation in retinal treatment responsible for the greatest prevention of vision loss in human history. All subsequent medications have provided incremental value but come with questionable societal "contribution margins" and enormous costs, amounting to billions of dollars. Avastin has delivered immense societal benefits without increasing shareholder value, employing sales teams, sponsoring drug company lunches, enriching "KOLs," or boosting egos on the podium. In fact, Avastin has negatively impacted shareholder value for Genentech by cannibalizing the sales of Lucentis. Napoleone Ferrara and other scientists at Genentech who researched angiogenesis, leading to the development of Avastin, have made an unparalleled societal contribution by saving vision worldwide. Genentech will be remembered more for its societal contributions than for its shareholder value. Genentech should be proud of this legacy. #ophthalmology #retina #optometry #strategy
