Interesting report two days ago out of Bulgaria on Russian A-50 radar aircraft, similar to our AWACS (but far less capable). The report claims the A-50 is being successful in targeting Ukraine. Using its airborne radar. Today over the Sea of Azov, an A-50 decided to join the Russian submarine fleet after being greeted by a Patriot missile. A-50 pilots should learn to stop smoking on planes, and to stop flying anywhere near Ukraine. The A-50 is estimated to cost $330 million USD. Russia only has a handful of these. Likely less than 10. It is also reported another bomber, IL-22, has opted to join the underwater Russian fleet. The fastest growing division in the Russian military. This also is very expensive and rare. Likely fewer than 10. So on one day Ukraine has taken out 10% of Russia’s radar aircraft and bombers. And these successful attacks will force Russia to change their strategy and tactics to bomb civilians. And after recently taking out 20% of Russia’s Black Sea fleet.

With Defense Beacon clients be the first to know !! The FMV - Försvarets materielverk , Defense Materiel Administration (#FMV) has recently launched the competition for the Surface-to-Surface Missile System (SSM RBS-18) program following the Request for Information (#RFI) issued in September 2023. According to FMV, the estimated value of this new program, excluding VAT, is SEK 3 billion (~$290 million). This includes the missiles, a maintenance contract, and framework agreements with an option for extension. Defense Beacon Insights: >Program Overview: The SSM RBS-18 program is designed for a short-range Anti-Ship Missile (#ASM) or Surface-to-Surface Missile (#SSM) system capable of targeting both maritime vessels and land targets. Its primary objective is to enhance coastal defense capabilities and secure maritime transport routes. >Strategic Context: This initiative is part of the Amfibiebataljon 2030 (Amfbat 2030) plan, aimed at upgrading the Swedish amphibious battalion's combat capabilities. The plan includes acquiring sea-mobile artillery platforms that can deliver precise indirect fire to protect coastal areas. In addition to these platforms, the program encompasses fire control support systems and training systems tailored for the amphibious operating environment. Recent Developments: In May 2023, FMV signed a contract with Swede Ship Marine AB for the delivery of eight artillery platforms, scheduled for delivery between 2027 and 2028. These platforms feature a Patria turret-mounted 120mm mortar fitted to the rear deck. Additionally, Sweden is seeking a new sea platform, potentially more of the CB 90HSM class, to serve the SSM RBS-18. System Replacement: It is anticipated that the new SSM RBS-18, available in both mounted and dismounted configurations, will also replace the currently used AGM-114C Hellfire missiles. >Support Infrastructure and Industry Opportunities: The successful deployment of the SSM RBS-18 will require a robust C4ISR system, integrated with networked coastal and aerial detection capabilities (including radar and electro-optical systems) based on advance "sensor to shooter" approach. This presents significant business opportunities for the defense industry, as the need for advanced detection, communication, and intelligence systems becomes paramount. >Competitors and Offerings: Who will be the competitors? What can they offer? What is their possible pricing? This and more can be provided through our services. Lithuania has signed an agreement for the purchase of multi-functional Thales GM200 MM/C radar systems from Thales Nederland, the Lithuanian Ministry of National Defence announced on Wednesday. The contract is valued at EUR 126.7 million. "The purpose of these radars is to identify the positions of the enemy's indirect fire systems based on the trajectory of fired projectiles and to ensure a rapid response to enemy fire," said Lithuanian Defence Minister Arvydas Anuszauskas, as quoted in the ministry's statement. The Minister emphasized that "this is a very important purchase" and that "the radar systems will significantly strengthen the artillery capabilities" of the Lithuanian Armed Forces. The Defence Ministry highlights that the radars acquired by Lithuania are characterized by advanced solutions, which will provide military units with technological advantage and greater operational flexibility. The Thales GM200 MM/C systems have already been purchased by the armed forces of the Netherlands and Norway. “This Government-to-Government contract between the Netherlands and Lithuania illustrates the strong European defence cooperation. We are proud to be a part of this collaboration between NATO countries for which our GM200 MM/C will increase the safety and security of military personnel and high value assets", says Gerben Edelijn, CEO Thales Netherlands.
