Are the old ways of farming the future for UK farmers? ⬇️ “We need to talk about farming and the importance of producing quantities of food from the land without destroying the natural world in the process” 🎙️Ian Wilkinson, FarmED - The Centre for Farm and Food Education Founder Today’s farming relies heavily on chemical fertilisers. Although this increases crop yields, it’s also damaging our land – our soils, trees, water and wildlife. 🟫 It’s disrupting the natural balance of soil nutrients and microorganisms, depleting the soil's organic matter and making it less resilient to floods and erosions 🌳 It's hurting our trees by over-fertilising them, making them more susceptible to pests and diseases, and making it difficult for them to absorb nutrients and water 🦆 And it's harming our wildlife by poisoning them, destroying their habitat, and reducing biodiversity. But there’s an alternative: 🌱 a traditional farming system that’s been used for over 400 generations, based on the principle of putting organic matter back into the soil. By reforming our farming system, moving away from convention farming practices towards regenerative agriculture and agro-ecology, we can revitalise the land, increase biodiversity, and create a more prosperous and climate-resilient future.
