🌍🤖 Fascinating data from Visual Capitalist reveals the expansive landscape of AI startups globally (2013-2023), the U.S. ranking first with 5,509 companies having raised >$1.5m. What's equally impressive is the geographical diversity in AI innovation and investment. China follows as a strong second with 1,446 startups, while the UK, Israel, and Canada complete the top 5. The surge of interest in AI has captured the attention of the investing community and yet, while AI startups continue propagating we should recognize there’s still an expanse of opportunity to invest in startups working on life-changing technology in other sectors. Hugh Chow, CEO of the Canadian hardware accelerator organization, ventureLAB brought this into focus for me during a recent conversation. VentureLAB, founded in 2013, has grown to be one of North America’s foremost accelerators for startups focused on developing semiconductor technologies and other critical hardware applications. During our talk, Hugh quipped that if you consider the lives and careers of famed AI researchers like Canadian Machine Learning expert, Geoffrey Hinton, what many people think of as a “breakthrough innovation” has actually been worked on for the past six or seven decades! Hugh can say this with all the credibility of his own experience. His undergrad thesis was on a four-by-four neural network and about working on that he joked that it’s “similar in principle now, just a million times larger.” Kidding aside, Hugh made a salient point that AI is one of many innovations that deserve the attention and support of the global investing community. He explained that while AI is a focus for VentureLAB (they just initiated their third AI-specific cohort) other sectors hold significant promise for making a positive impact on human life. These include core semiconductor technologies, medical, drone, education and elder care technologies… all of which Hugh is very passionate about. He acknowledged that AI can be integrated into all of those, but pointed out there are risks associated with the proliferation of AI that everyone involved in developing it should be diligent about. He punctuated this by saying that only if AI can be developed responsibly will it become truly useful for humankind. Frankly, I expected a different answer when I asked Hugh about his view on where AI is heading, but I was excited by his somewhat contrarian response. When it seems like the entire world wants to go in one direction, he and VentureLAB remain focused on their course and the principles that have helped them empower more than 4,000 startups since 2013. 🔍 Spotlight on Gen AI Founders! Our team analyzed profiles of 5800 Generative AI founders in 3200 startups to determine their key traits and their correlation with funding patterns. Key Insights: 1️⃣ The US, as expected, has a majority of Gen AI startups. India, Israel, and select European regions (UK, Germany, France) are emerging as Gen AI innovation hubs. 2️⃣ Building Gen AI solutions has captivated many serial entrepreneurs; there are >1.5x more repeat founders in the Gen AI space than unicorn founders. 3️⃣ Seasoned experts are more prominent in the Gen AI domain: Gen AI founders have a median of 12 years of work experience; 4 years more than the average unicorn founder. Funded founders have a median work experience of 15 years. 4️⃣ Solo founders are 2x more common in the Gen AI domain compared to the general startup ecosystem. While multi-founder teams have higher odds of funding, VCs haven’t shied away from funding solo founders. 5️⃣ Technical domain expertise is pivotal: 60% of founders stem from computer science and engineering disciplines, and 64% have held roles in the software sector. 30% of the growth-stage founders hold doctoral degrees. 6️⃣ Unicorn hubs in the US (Stanford, MIT, Harvard) and overseas (IITs in India, Tel Aviv University in Israel) are producing significant gen AI startups.
