Tuesday, October 10 is World Mental Health Day. According to the World Health Organization, “World Mental Health Day 2023 is an opportunity for people and communities to unite behind the theme ‘Mental health is a universal human right’ to improve knowledge, raise awareness and drive actions that promote and protect everyone’s mental health as a universal human right.” I dedicate my post today to my fund development colleagues who dedicate their all to ensure nonprofit organizations have the resources they need fulfill their ambitious missions. While many of us find joy in our work, it can be easy to neglect our own needs – for self-care, to pursue our personal goals, to be healthy, for connection – while we are constantly trying to meet the needs of others. If we want to ensure we are at our very best for our colleagues, our donors and the communities we serve, we have to prioritize our mental health. 🌟 Today, on Mental Health Awareness Day, we celebrate the progress we've made in starting critical conversations around mental health. It's heartening to see more people sharing their stories and experiences, breaking the stigma that has plagued this topic for far too long. But, as we take this moment to reflect, we must acknowledge that there is still much work to be done. 🤔 Despite increased awareness, countless individuals continue to struggle to access the right support they need. Our mental health hospitals often stand in disrepair, lacking the necessary resources and funding. Waitlists for mental health services remain unacceptably long, leaving those in need in a state of vulnerability and despair. The question then arises, where does this leave us? 🙏 Days like today serve as powerful reminders of our collective commitment to mental health. However, it is imperative that we channel this awareness into tangible action. As I explored Mind's website today, I discovered ways in which we can make a real difference: ✍️ Sign petitions calling on the UK government to honour their promise and deliver a reformed Mental Health Act before the next general election. The new Mental Health Bill should bolster individuals' rights, choices, and control during their time in a mental health hospital. 💚 Consider donating or fundraising. Your contributions could help sustain Mind's online peer support community, Side By Side, which plays a crucial role in connecting people, providing much-needed support, and helping individuals feel less isolated. 🤝 Most importantly, let's support each other. For children, existing treatments for depression are effective in only 60% of cases. After treatment, 50 - 75% experience a relapse. Why are these outcomes so poor? How can we make progress?
