The first time I was invited to speak, I was both thrilled and terrified. I was afraid that I was a fraud. I wasn't—I'd written a great book, lots of research, and dozens of magazine articles on mental health and neurodiversity. But none of that mattered. Sometimes we call this feeling "imposter syndrome," which is feeling self-doubt even in areas where you excel. So what did I do? I prepared and prepared and prepared. I hoped. And when I arrived on the campus of the small college up north, I was greeted by the most lovely team of hosts I could imagine. I gave my keynote, and the audience was generous and authentic. I learned that I am not a fraud, but I also learned that preparation is key. And I learned that no matter how many talks I give, every institution deserves my all. As so I give it my all every time. After all, I'm speaking about mental health and neurodiversity, my life's work, the change I hope to make in this world while I'm here. Evey talk I give is a chance to make the world a better place, a gift of an audience to listen to my message. Of course I'm going to give it my all. It's what I do. Today, I'm speaking on "Neurodiversity and Accessibility in Higher Education" to The University of New Mexico College of Population health, and I'm grateful to be doing so. Premier Roundtable: Mental Health on Campus January 31, 2024 @ 1:00 pm – 2:00 pm EST The Center for Collegiate Mental Health (CCMH) at Penn State University is an international practice-research network of over 800 colleges and universities whose mission is to bridge the gap between science and practice in college counseling centers. CCMH collects and analyzes de-identified data as part of the routine practice when students seek mental health treatment at colleges and universities. The information is used, in turn, to benefit college counseling centers, administrators, researchers, the public, and most importantly the students receiving services. In the current program, the mission and scope of CAPS and CCMH will be reviewed. The latest national findings will be presented, including updated trends in student mental health and the impact of COVID-19. https://buff.ly/48UOi0m

▶ If you are heading for NASPA do spend some time checking out what TalkCampus can do to support students' mental health. ▶ I'm just heading out now to join my great colleagues Dan Joyce, Hannah Mogg, Joyce L. and Deepak Sekhri. 🔊 As the American Council on Education state: ●Increasing the availability of mental health care is helpful but not sufficient ●Despite the approximate doubling in mental health service use during the past 10 to 15 years, the rise in distress continues unabated—far outpacing increases in service use ●These challenges have led campus communities to ask whether a more proactive, preventive approach to student mental health is possible. ●Such a public health approach should not replace traditional mental health services, which are generally effective but only reach a portion of students. Time for positive change.

🎓 Exciting Milestone Ahead: Reflecting on My 4-Year Master’s Journey 🌟 As I approach the culmination of my four-year journey as a Master’s student in Clinical Mental Health , specializing in childhood and adolescence disorders, I find myself both reflective and invigorated by the experiences that have shaped my professional path. 🔍 Academic Exploration: From delving into the intricacies of childhood and adolescence disorders to exploring innovative therapeutic approaches, every course has been a stepping stone in my academic journey. The depth of knowledge gained has equipped me to understand and address the nuanced mental health needs of young individuals. 🤝 Hands-On Engagement: Beyond the classroom, my journey has been enriched by hands-on experiences. Working with individuals with disabilities and refugees with special needs has been an eye-opening and humbling aspect of my education. Each interaction has underscored the importance of tailored, empathetic care, reinforcing my commitment to inclusivity in mental health services. 🌍 Global Perspective: Engaging with refugees facing unique mental health challenges has provided me with a global perspective. Navigating cultural nuances and advocating for the mental well-being of those who have experienced displacement has been a transformative aspect of my journey. 👩🎓 Upcoming Graduation: As I look ahead to May 2025, I am filled with gratitude for the knowledge gained, the lives touched, and the growth experienced. Graduating with an emphasis in childhood and adolescence disorders is not just a personal achievement but a commitment to making a positive impact in the lives of young individuals facing mental health challenges. 🚀 Next Chapter: This journey has prepared me for the next chapter in my professional life. I am eager to leverage my education, experiences, and passion to contribute meaningfully to the field of clinical mental health counseling. Thrilled to share the insightful findings from a recent survey that my partner Jimena Fernandez and myself, conducted at Arkansas State University campus Querétaro, bringing awareness on the critical need to prioritize mental health support on college campuses. The results underscore the challenges students face and emphasize the urgency of addressing mental health issues head-on. In today's interconnected world, mental health knows no borders. Reflecting on these findings, it's evident that the need for robust mental health initiatives transcends geographical boundaries. This holds particularly true in Mexico, where the conversation around mental wellness is gaining momentum but still requires concerted efforts. Every student deserves access to resources and support systems that nurture their well-being. Let's continue advocating for inclusive policies and fostering environments where students feel empowered to seek help without stigma.
