Are you giving too much? I read “The Giving Tree” as a child and it always made me uncomfortable — especially how every time the Giving Tree literally diminishes itself, we are told this makes the tree happy. But it was consistent with the message I got from a lot of different sources in my youth: the more you care, the more you give. And the giving should make you happy. It took me far too many years to change the story I tell myself about boundaries. I now know that an absence of boundaries does not: - show my dedication - prove my worth - make me happy And I also know now that no one will make the boundaries for me. That’s my job.
