Practice what you preach. Saturday morning reflections. As a DeafBlind disabled queer person, I know I am not perfect myself but it is crucial to be diligent about practicing what we preach. Especially in the area of activism work towards creating a more equitable inclusive space for diverse communities with disabilities. When we preach about being inclusive, but don’t practice this by enable others in resharing their not inclusive posts without making it inclusive - that goes against what we are striving for here… Think about it. Diving into the world of About Face Theatre's RE/GENERATION Studio was a game-changer for this musician who never imagined themselves directing a play. 🎵🎭 In December, I attended DND (Directors in Development), and let me tell you, those two hours were a spike of inspiration. 🌟 Immersed in the Unfamiliar: As someone whose comfort zone is usually found in music notes rather than script lines, the experience was unexpectedly transformative—never acted in a play? Check. Never read a play in a group? Double-check. Never thought about directing a play? Triple-check. Yet, there I was, feverishly taking notes, completely forgetting my background for a moment. 🤔 Reimagining Yourself: It got me thinking, who would you be if you could reimagine yourself for just two hours? 🤯 About Face Theatre provides you that space to explore, challenge, and redefine. 🎭 Spark Your Creativity: Their mission of advancing LGBTQ equity through community building, education, and performance is something I support. 🏳️🌈Happy Pride month! 🏳️🌈 Pride is a vibrant celebration of love, diversity, and the freedom to be unapologetically yourself. Inclusivity is the heart of Pride. Our events, discussions, and activities must embrace EVERYONE, including those with disabilities. Did you know that members of our LGBTQIA community are 1.5 times more likely to also be living with a disability? This intersection of identities is a complex reality that we must acknowledge and understand. ☐ Over half (52%) of transgender adults live with a disability. ☐ Autistic adults are 8 times more likely to identify as asexual or another non-heterosexual orientation. So, if you're organizing Pride events, activations, or content, please ensure our celebrations are truly inclusive. Make your events and digital activations accessible to all. This includes: ► Providing captions and sign language interpreters for virtual events. ► Ensuring physical venues are wheelchair accessible. ► Offering sensory-friendly spaces and activities. ► Using accessible language and providing alternative formats for all communications. True Pride means ensuring true inclusion for all.
