We often see 𝐢𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞𝐬 used to manipulate engagement across an affiliate program. A lot of programs actually have rules in their T&C's forbidding their use but they tend to pop up anyway. Here is a good example of how they can be abused. This 𝐬𝐮𝐛-𝐩𝐚𝐫𝐭𝐧𝐞𝐫 is masked via this 𝐚𝐟𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐚𝐭𝐞 𝐧𝐞𝐭𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤, with no referring information or any insights passed through to the brand. The sub-partner has managed to artificially tag 𝐢𝐅𝐫𝐚𝐦𝐞 𝐜𝐥𝐢𝐜𝐤𝐬 onto each page view as this user browses the site. The user arrived organically through a Google search, and then from the 2nd pageview onwards (line 2), an iFrame pops up within 5 seconds of every pageview. - 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 2 > 𝘪𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 3 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 2 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘴 - 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 5 > 𝘪𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 6 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 3 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘴 - 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 7 > 𝘪𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 8 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 5 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘴 - 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 11 > 𝘪𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 12 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 3 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥𝘴 - 𝘗𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘦𝘸 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 13 > 𝘪𝘍𝘳𝘢𝘮𝘦 𝘤𝘭𝘪𝘤𝘬 𝘰𝘯 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦 14 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘯 1 𝘴𝘦𝘤𝘰𝘯𝘥 This user actually completed their purchase at line 9 and then left the site. They then came back 6 days later (line 11) to cancel, but as the system is still in place, the iFrames continue to pop up following each new pageview. There was also actually legitimate engagement with a cashback partner on line 4 here, but as the iFrames continue to generate, this fraudulent sub-partner won the attribution for this sale away from the cashback partner. This type of activity has so many negative effects on a program, and damages confidence both on the brand and the publisher side. Brands end up rewarding fraudulent partners, and genuine publishers have their genuine commissions stolen away. #affiliatemarketing #adfraud #clickfraud

So Google announced big news in December with major implications for the affiliate marketing industry. They are phasing out third-party cookies ("3P cookies") in the Chrome browser starting in January and finalizing the rollout by Q2 2024. What does this mean for online retailers still using 3P cookies? Well, they simply MUST adapt to these changes, and implement cookieless tracking methods for their affiliate programs. Get more details in this post from Wildfire Systems, Inc's Head of Product, Ian Miller: https://hubs.la/Q02k2jyV0 #thirdpartycookies #3pcookies #privacy #cookiefreefuture #digitalmarketing #affiliatemarketing #ecommerce #onlineretail #tracking #attribution #adtech #consumerprivacy #postcookieera

🍪 Cookie Stuffing: The Dirty Secret of Affiliate Marketing You Never Knew About Let's talk about cookie stuffing. It's a sneaky tactic that's costing legitimate businesses millions. 💸 Here's how it works: 👉 A fraudster creates a website or tool. 👉 It secretly drops affiliate cookies on your device. 👉 If you later buy from those merchants, the fraudster gets paid. 👉 Genuine affiliates lose out. Big time. Sounds harmless? Think again. One scammer swindled eBay out of $28 million! 😱 But here's the kicker: It's incredibly hard to catch these digital pickpockets. 🚨 Why It Matters: Affiliate marketing is a system where businesses pay others for bringing in clicks or sales. If Publisher X sends visitors to a retailer like Amazon, they earn a small percentage of the sales. But with cookie stuffing, a sneaky scammer also gets credit (and money) for the sale by dropping multiple cookies. This "cookie stuffing" creates wrongful attribution, stealing credit from legitimate publishers. 💡 Reflecting on this, it's clear that protecting our reputation as both affiliates and programs requires constant vigilance. #AffiliateMarketing #AffiliateManagement #CookieStuffing
