I have recently been to one of Vancouver's very popular SteakHouses. Indeed I paid attention to the details of exterior and interior, noticed the sign that was down, the door that opened way easily though it looked heavy enough (that thing I love, God!). I was and still am impressed by the waitress, I believe her name was Monica. The manager of the restaurant, what a lovely woman! Professional, polite and I could sense, truly hardworking. I gave her a question, as again, noticed that only beautiful staff members (I saw mostly females) would work there. - Well, I believe you hire the beautiful associates only. The answer was, thank you very much for your honesty, Dear Manager: - I believe people come to restaurants to look at beautiful people. Of course they are not only beautiful but are skilled as well.... The rest did not matter much, as I also would have the same scenario for justification. Now, talking about diversity, how astonishing can that be? Or shocking? Again, that was pure truth actually. I am not raising contradicting factors here, no need, I saw what I saw.

Extraordinary talent is hard to come by, but if you pay attention, you can spot it a mile away. Last week at Vacation Rental Management Association (VRMA), I was having a drink with some friends at the Four Seasons Hotels and Resorts lobby bar, and the bartender really stood out to me. I noticed how immaculately he did his job, engaging with customers, preparing drinks perfectly and just the way he held himself. He was a pro. And then the unthinkable happened. Across the bar, a man had a seizure and needed immediate medical attention. The bartender sprung into action without hesitation, taking over the situation with urgency, but still remaining totally calm. His lack of fear and intense professionalism is what stood out to me. While the patrons seemed unsure of what to do, the bartender seamlessly took charge and attended to this obvious emergency situation. That to me is an extraordinary employee. Someone who not only can do their “job,” but can also react to the unexpected and go above and beyond whenever the need arises. If I was hiring a bartender, I would have offered him a job on the spot! In hindsight, this incident just reminded me how rare and special talent can be found in the most unexpected places. And yep, the hospitality industry sure does employ some amazing people! We are a rare breed. #hospitality #emergency #talent #leadership #hiring

Though you may not be interested in yachts or cooking, I recommend you watch the first four minutes of this video, which talks the concept of Staging. Staging is a practice that enables experts to learn from each other through one-on-one interactions while working together. I feel like more professions would benefit from adopting this practice, especially as I've seen what can result from effective teamwork in restaurants as I've been a Sous Chef (past life) and been in the tech/design/business world. Just as a culinary team works together to deliver exceptional service, professionals in tech, design, and business can learn from this example and seek better ways to collaborate. Although the comparison isn't perfect, I feel that sharing these experiences can inspire us to work toward building more cooperative and rewarding work environments. Staging can serve as a model for fostering expertise, cooperation, and learning within and across industries and I wish more professions did it. https://lnkd.in/e7ymhMzQ
