Network Rail has announced that it is offering train operators the chance to gain discounts on their track access charges. It hopes that the move will attract new business – particularly freight – to the railway, helping it to reach its ambitious targets. As part of the offer, charges would be waived in full for six months while new traffic was established. #railnews #railways #ukrail #rail

Multimodal transport is a must have in the list of goals for sustainibility and CO2 level dumping. As a matter of fact, rail freight suffering track access fees in comparison with passenger trains. So this is first limit. How we can manage it? Strategy for multimodal transport must include cargo ships, rail freights and trucks according to the last mile tactic. They are not in competition bu they have to be integrated. Other point is: do we need to move so a lot of goods? Bulk containers are the most sustainable way for cargo? I’d like to have your opinion on it.
Whether rail is a greener mode of transport compared to putting your project cargo on a ship is a debate to be had. Some say it is, and others say that it can’t compare to shipping when it comes to ton-mile. Moving project cargo on rail does have its limitations. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

GB Railfreight has unveiled its new hybrid Class 99 locomotive, signalling a significant leap forward in decarbonising the UK’s rail freight industry. The new Class 99s are expected to reduce emissions by up to 58% per journey compared to the industry norm (the Class 66s) and are being offered exclusively to GBRf customers as a new solution for the sustainable movement of goods across the UK. These hybrid trains are the first heavy-haul freight locomotives capable of moving significant volume at mainline speeds on electrified and non-electrified sections of the rail network. The new trains will shorten journey times and drive efficiencies for customers across the UK’s transport infrastructure. https://bit.ly/3XERbOX #rail #freight #hybridtrains #sustainability #emissions

The modal share of rail freight in #Switzerland fell by 0.5 per cent in the second half of 2024 compared to the same period last year. On the other hand, trucks crossing the #Alps through the #HelveticFederation increased by 3.5 per cent. The main reason behind these trends was the closure of the #GotthardBaseTunnel, shut down for over a year between August 2023 and September 2024. #railfreight #railfreightnews #railcargonews

Intermodal Freight, Road2Rail, how in Australia? Learning from the best in the world is never going to be a bad place to start. This time I had to go to Europe to learn from the best, so I did. Joseph Misuraca from MHD Supply Chain News heard I has been to Europe to look at, and learn about their '4th Generation' Road to Rail intermodal systems. For 25 years I have had so many people ask me "how do we get more freight off the roads and onto rail?" For 20 years I knew why we couldn't, but I didn't have a solution either. Typical - problems are a 'dime a dozon', but real answers are hard to find. I now believe I have found the direction, and maybe the answers. For the past 5-years I have been researching Europe's rapidly expanding Road to Rail systems. However, without seeing these 4th Generation systems working, without opertional undersanding and without real OpEx and CapEx costs, my thinking was easy to dismiss. So I funded my own research trip. Below is an introduction to some of what I learnt. Enjoy the short read and please leave a comment. Thank you to Anna Samsonova from LOHR INDUSTRIE, Imad J. from CFL Bettembourg, Marco Schmidt and Jean-Marc ABACHIN from CargoBeamer for your generousity in hosting me and openness in sharing your respective businesses. #Railfreight #Intermodal #road2rail #InlandRail #Portshuttles
Prological’s Peter Jones explains in this 'MHD' op-ed the benefits of rail freight and how adopting aspects of the European model can help us decrease our reliance on road freight. https://lnkd.in/gEHMCZGG #trucking #supplychain #logistics #freight #distribution #Australia #Europe#inland #terminals #rail #road #Melbourne #Sydney #Brisbane #pallets
