One of the mistakes I often see STEM PhDs make in their industry job search is to overfocus on getting into a "Top 5" company. These companies are incredibly difficult to enter because they often have 1000s of applicants for every job opening. But working in a Top 5 company isn't the only way to have impact. Often smaller companies and startups are actually the ones driving innovation. And they also often strategically partner with the larger companies for investment. It's a great way to get a foot in the door. So, before you commit your job search to the "Top 5", consider searching out some of the innovators and disruptors - you won't be disappointed. To help get you started, here are 5 companies who just recently received funding for their innovation efforts, who are also currently hiring for STEM-related roles: 1. eGenesis, Inc. - Biotech that develops human-compatible engineered organs to address the deficit of organs for transplant 2. Nym - An autonomous medical coding company that is helping reduce the administrative burden in the healthcare system, so providers can focus on patient care 3. Heartbeat Health - A tech-enabled cardiac care provider that is tackling cardiac care through virtual intervention. 4. Enterome - A biopharmaceutical company focused on developing immunotherapies for cancer treatment 5. Confo Therapeutics - A biopharm company that created a technology platform to stablize functional conformations of GPCRs enabling the discovery of new drug targets. >>> Pass it along - repost to help a friend :) __________________________________ Are you a PhD struggling to land a job in industry? Executive Clinical Operations Leader | Biotech/Pharma Clinical Program Strategy & Operations | Drug Development
I experienced a first in my career about a year ago. That first was and has been a 100% remote study coordinator in a very complex Oncology study. While I fully support flexible work situations, I would be amiss if I didn't emphasize the challenges my team has faced in this situation. If you're still reading, let's connect and talk about best practices in these unprecedented times. In oncology clinical research, Sponsors face several challenges when working with remote site staff, which can impact trial timelines, data quality, and regulatory compliance. One major challenge is communication and coordination. Remote staff often operate in different time zones or regions, making it difficult to synchronize study-related activities such as patient recruitment, monitoring, and data collection. Miscommunication can lead to delays or inconsistencies in trial procedures. Another issue is the variability in staff training and experience. Remote sites may have staff with differing levels of expertise in oncology research, which can affect the quality and accuracy of data. Sponsors must invest significant time and resources into ensuring that remote teams are adequately trained and follow standardized protocols. Data management and compliance are also concerns. Ensuring real-time data entry and adherence to Good Clinical Practice (GCP) can be difficult when sites are not centrally located. Remote monitoring technologies like electronic data capture (EDC) systems help, but they require thorough oversight to ensure data integrity and timely reporting. Lastly, patient engagement can be more challenging at remote sites. Oncology trials often require frequent visits and complex procedures, and patients at remote sites may face barriers to participation, impacting trial enrollment and retention rates. References: 1.
