If you want to increase conversions for your SaaS or ecommerce company, trust is your #1 resource (or your #1 enemy). Let me explain... Buying online inevitably comes with risk. Customers have to trust that if they give their valuable banking information, they’re going to get what they bought in return – whether it takes 30 seconds for the digital product or log in to hit their email inbox, or a week for a package to show up on their doorstep. If they don’t trust your company to deliver on that promise, they’ll never convert. Here are a few things to help ease their concerns: 👉 Calculate shipping before taking payment information If you ask a customer for their banking information and then jack up the price after they give it to you (even if it’s just a few dollars), you’ve just violated any bit of trust you earned up to that point. 👉 Integrate digital wallets 19 percent of customers abandon their carts because of security concerns over giving out their payment information. Payment options such as PayPal, Apple Pay or Google Pay provide customers with a secure, trusted payment method. 👉 Use guarantees If your company offers anything like a free lifetime warranty, a risk-free 30-day return period or even free shipping for returns, customers will feel at ease knowing that even if something does go wrong, they have a way to fix it quickly and easily. How your customer feels about their purchase is more important than any other concrete experience you can provide. A little bit of reassurance goes a long way.

Dropping your price won’t drive payments adoption. For SaaS companies, it’s tempting to think about dropping price as a simple way to drive merchants to your embedded payment solution. Pricing is important to your revenue strategy and so it makes sense to project this onto merchants as well. In most cases merchants will claim that lower pricing is important, but the vast majority of the cost of accepting payments isn’t your margin, it’s the card network and issuing bank fees (passthrough costs like interchange and dues, fees, and assessments). This means that the impact you can have by decreasing your margin doesn’t help your merchants as much as it hurts you, and it’s difficult to position it in a way that is meaningful to the merchant. For example, if you’re billing customers 3% and your costs are 2.60%, you can cut your margin in half and only be able to effect a .20% (or 20 basis point) or 7% cost savings for the merchant. 20 bps across your total platform volume is meaningful, but for the average merchant processing $250,000 per year, that only equals $500 of savings. Not nearly meaningful enough to motivate them to take action. I worked with a platform that offered enterprise merchants a total card processing fee of 1% for 6 months. At $20M per year with 1% of savings, this equaled 6-figures of savings. You would expect this to have a major impact on adoption, but what happened was surprising. The response was virtually zero. The short-term savings wasn’t enough to warrant the pain in moving. How did that platform ultimately get merchants to migrate? Deeply integrating payments into core platform features, like revenue forecasting and invoice automation, and sunsetting legacy processor support. Worked like magic. And this isn’t uncommon. The key to adoption and migration really isn’t about price, it’s about value.
