https://lnkd.in/dwEB5pzQ How China Is Remaking Hong Kong in Its Image June 28th, 2024, 2:30 AM GMT 0530 It’s been five years since pro-democracy protests rocked Hong Kong. Since then, China has tightened its grip on the territory, restricting civil liberties, arresting dozens of opposition figures and passing sweeping changes to its political system. These days, the Asian financial hub is looking increasingly similar to the mainland. So what does that mean for the city’s future?

I am pleased to announce my latest article, "Chen Pinlin's Quest for Justice Amid China's Censorship Storm." This piece underscores the vital role of journalistic freedom in uncovering human rights abuses. It pays tribute to the bravery of director Chen Pinlin, also known as Plato, who produced the documentary "Ürümqi Middle Road" (乌鲁木齐中路). The documentary is a powerful testament to resilience, capturing the harrowing scenes of the White Paper Revolution and highlighting citizens' determination to defy censorship and protest against stringent regulations that infringed upon their very sense of freedom and right to be protected by the police, not abused. Chen's courage in documenting these events emphasizes the importance of protecting journalistic freedom to ensure the truth is revealed and justice is sought.
During the global Covid-19 pandemic, China shut down completely, forcing residents to remain trapped in their homes and censoring any opposition to the state-mandated “zero-Covid” policy. In this latest publication, HRRC contributor Shirley Lin discusses the development of the White Paper Revolution in China, and highlights filmmaker Chen Pinlin’s documentary titled, “Urumqi Middle Road”, which captures videos of police brutality, iron wires that trapped citizens in their homes during emergencies, and peaceful protests mourning those who died in the Ürümqi fires. ➡️ https://cli.re/VE1N31 di Guido Gargiulo 🇹🇼 | Since Lai Ching-te took office as president, Taiwan has experienced difficulty. Recent reforms proposed and accepted by the Legislative Yuan, dominated by the Kuomintang (KMT) and Taiwan People's Party (TPP), contrast sharply with the current Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) government, sparking significant debate. President Lai faces his first major challenges post-Tsai Ing-wen government. The protests have grown in prominence, leading to the emergence of popular movements like the Bluebird Movement. But what is the Bluebird Movement, and what is happening in Taiwan?

The historic China visit by Australia's Prime Minister Anthony Albanese would be a diversion, for Chairman Xi, from the threat of spontaneous nation-wide mourning for Premier Li Keqiang's sudden death and a wave of subtle public protest gestures. The visit, writes international affairs analyst Peter Hartcher, represents a shift in rhetoric, rather than substance. As such, Australia's current and former governments have refused to concede to overt economic coercion by the Chinese state, reflecting limits of China's more overt coercive efforts and approach. The visit, marking the 40th anniversary of the first state visit by an Australian Prime Minister (Gough Whitlam) to China and the beginning of diplomatic relations with the PRC, marks a watershed shift: " (PM) Albanese is taking his victory lap on behalf of Australia, amid the shades of Halloween and Li Keqiang. He also will be attended by...the ghost of an earlier Australian naivety, vestige of a lost era when the future with China seemed so bright." #australia #china #diplomacy #coercivecontrol #geopolitics #trade #embargo #ccp #xijinping

Taiwan (ROC) has long ago renounced its outdated policy of taking back mainland China. The PRC should also renounce its old outdated policy of taking back Taiwan. Both the ROC and PRC are now runned by their local citizens. Neither country needs to be freed from foreign domination. Both are now free to decide their own futures. The idea of a senseless war of conquest should be abandoned by both sides.
