🌱 2023 Impact Highlights from Rachel's Table 🌱 In a year of challenges with rising food prices and global conflicts, Rachel's Table has made significant strides in fighting food insecurity in Western Massachusetts. 🍎🥦 ➡️ Distributed over 760,000 lbs of healthy food to those in need. ➡️ 71% increase in farm-fresh produce donations to over 90 agencies. ➡️ Doubled distribution of meat, dairy, and produce, thanks to our refrigerated van. ➡️ Saved 1,000 tons of greenhouse gases & 81 million gallons of water. ➡️ Welcomed 19 new food donors and 7 new agencies, expanding our reach. ➡️ Engaged 350 volunteers across diverse backgrounds, deepening community ties. Our efforts in 2023 have not only alleviated hunger but also promoted environmental stewardship and community collaboration. And we did all of this while becoming our own nonprofit. Join us. Let's shift our focus from using the word "hunger" in the charitable food system. It's time to prioritize dignity in the fight for food equity. Do you want to stand in a line for free food that advertises you are food insecurity? Probably not. After 15 years of direct service work, I've learned that changing our communication strategy creates inclusion, dignity, grace, and belonging. Instead of promoting hunger relief, let's work together to ensure everyone has access to nourishing food. Here are 3 solutions for effective communication change: 1. Grab-N-Go FREE food (b/c we want you to focus on school and not food) 🎒 2. End food waste and save the planet 🌎 3. It's time to empower farmers to combat hunger and eliminate the reliance on their food donations! By fostering community engagement and embracing innovative solutions, we can make a significant impact. Exciting news from Northeastern Pennsylvania! 📢📢📢 We've introduced 4 new markets to support local farmers, including farm-to-nonprofit, farm-to-community stands in food apartheid areas, farm-to-school produce stands 📚📚📚, and farm-to-retail in low-income communities. 🛒🛒🛒 This initiative doesn't involve warehousing or complex logistics, leading to reduced food loss on farms and increased profits for farmers. In a recent success story, 300lbs of freshly harvested broccoli 🥦🥦🥦 was prevented from going to waste, breaking the cycle of farmers feeling obligated to donate their produce. We are happy to announce our Inaugural Summer Food Drive! 🌞 Help us reach our goal of feeding 100 families this summer! 🌞 As summer rays blanket the landscape, the challenge of food insecurity intensifies for many individuals and families. ◾ With schools closing for vacation, the safety net of school meal programs disappears, leaving children at risk of going without nutritious meals. ◾ The soaring temperatures amplify the strain on limited resources, making it difficult for vulnerable communities to secure consistent access to fresh, wholesome food. ◾ In our current economic climate, more families are facing food insecurity than ever. Surprisingly, this often includes households with two working parents. As we savor the flavors of summer, let's also turn our attention to the urgent need for community-driven initiatives, support networks, and sustainable solutions to ensure that fewer people go hungry during these sunlit months. This morning, we're kicking off day two of our 2024 Food Sovereignty Summit with the panel, "Addressing Systemic Bias in Philanthropy: The Importance of Funding Native Communities." As we know, Tribes and Native-led organizations have historically received an underwhelming amount of support and funding which has only been on the decline over decades. That's why we're engaging a panel of foundations to have a conversation on the importance in funding Native-led and grassroot community organizations or Tribes. #FNDIFoodSummit
