Sustainment NCOs provide a unique strategic advantage to execute sustainment operations at the tactical, operational, and strategic levels. The Army's senior enlisted sustainer, says for these NCOs it is imperative that they major in warfighting and minor in sustainment operations. As a prerequisite to obtaining a degree in warfighting, sustainment NCOs must be brilliant at the basics. We stand on the shoulders of these giants. What were World War II WASPs, and what roles did they fulfill? In 1942, the Women's Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron and Women's Flying Training Detachment was established to utilize women pilots for aircraft ferrying needs. Led by Nancy Love and Jackie Cochran, these groups later merged into the Women's Airforce Service Pilots (WASP) in 1943. By the numbers: ➡️ 1,074 graduates ➡️ ferried over 50% of US combat aircraft during the war. ➡️ 126 bases, they towed targets for gunnery training and instructed for the Eastern Flying Training Command. ➡️ 38 lost their lives during their service. ✝️ 11 died in training accidents ✝️ 27 lost their lives during missions The WASP program officially ended in December 1944, and their records were sealed. In the 1970s, when the Air Force accepted women for pilot training, the WASPs demanded recognition. In 1977, they were granted veteran status, and subsequent acknowledgments, including the Congressional Gold Medal in 2009, finally honored their service. Recently I was gifted a photo with 3 WASP signatures. My new prized position as only a handful are still alive today. ❤️ 🫡 Their history has been preserved at Texas Woman's University by Katherine (Kate) Landdeck.
