I think a lot about streets: how people use their sidewalks and vehicle lanes; how they hold and manage infrastructure like SWM and utilities; and when the transitions like curbs work or stymie people. Is it time to re-think the curb lane? Can adjusting this detail of the streetscape give us big returns in transforming attitudes from vehicle-centric streets to people-centric streets? https://lnkd.in/epJV727W

According to NYC DOT data, about 80% of households in New York City now receive at least one delivery per week; 20% receive four or more. 🚚 Great article on how curb management and congestion pricing are intertwined via Bloomberg CityLab, and how the Open Mobility Foundation and Populus are partnering with cities to help them dynamically manage their curb space. 💡 #congestionpricing #curbmanagement #parking #smartcities

When you make these decisions to close off streets permanently, it impacts more than just the few successful restaurants dominating and doing well. Having discussed this issue with some of the long-time retailers and seeing all the empty storefronts, their businesses are in the toilet because people can't find parking and don't want to drive around to find it...so they leave. California Avenue is a long-time charming, eclectic street, mainly with small businesses. While car-free worked for the pandemic, a study should have been done-instead of dismissed-to determine the full impact. Maybe close just on the weekends, one lane, or some sort of compromise. Ignorant and arrogant of PA City Council. There are parts of the Mission in SF also in the same boat-car-free permanently and also feeling the pinch. It shouldn't just be the loud voices that determine the future of #SMB

🍔🚙One of the most ubiquitous indicators of a car-centric culture, the drive-thru #restaurant, has been banned from parts of a major city in the #US. Specifically, the construction of such dining establishments will be prohibited in the immediate area around a multiuser path— the Atlanta BeltLine. In a further blow to the #fossilfuel companies and #autoindustry, gas stations are also restricted from this zone. 🐓🧐The impetus for this was the construction of two Chick-fil-A Restaurants very close to the Beltline on an already-dangerous street, Ponce de Leon Avenue. This area has been rapidly redeveloping with high-density residential and commercial #realestate projects best suited for pedestrian and #cyclist access. So, two large drive-thru restaurants from the same company plopping down on the corridor seemed like a big step backwards to many in the City of Atlanta. 🚴🏽♀️🚶♂️🚙💨☠️Road violence is a major problem in the city: “Councilman Jason Dozier, who authored the ordinances, said the legislation matters because the number of pedestrians struck and killed by motorists in #Atlanta more than doubled between 2020 and 2021. He said Black pedestrians are twice as likely to be struck and killed while walking than any other ethnic group.” #equity #visionzero #completestreets #bikes https://lnkd.in/g5z5ujrp (khp)

Creative community connector. I use marketing and project management expertise to create and engage communities.
"Sidewalk chaos isn’t intentional. It happens because no one is empowered with the wide-angle lens necessary to cohesively see and address all of the sidewalk’s users and functions." "Local departments of sidewalks would shift power and financial costs away from adjacent property owners, restoring efficient, equitable, and accountable maintenance. And they would consolidate all the functions currently scattered across agencies, creating more coherent and navigable regulation." "So, rather than spending taxpayer dollars to essentially send a city employee to point at a sidewalk problem and tell an individual owner to fix it, the municipality could spend that money to pay that same employee to do the job themself. Take snow, for example. Individual property owners have no reason to invest in anything more than a shovel given the relatively small scale of their own operations. But a municipality with its much larger scale could reasonably invest in more efficient, motorized sidewalk snowplows." #ActiveTransportation #DepartmentOfSidewalks #Sidewalks #PedestrianSafety #Pedestrians
