Subtitles are popular in Asia; so why not in Western countries? Even in their own language, 56.9% of Koreans prefer to watch animations or movies with subtitles on (2022 Statista). It is also very common for Asian YouTubers and content creators to include subtitles on their videos, even if their viewers speak the same language. With subtitles, people are exposed to more foreign content, allowing amazing content to spread and ideas to flourish. 'Parasite' (2019) changed how Western media looked at foreign content and it's been changing ever since. It's funny to think that movies actually started out with subtitles and now, we're potentially coming back full circle! #subtitles #voicetalentonline #subtitling

Have you ever wondered why movies don't run for the entire year? It seems like our entertainment consumption has become so rapid that we can't remember the exact number of movies we've watched in a year. The constant stream of entertainment and online content creates a cycle, leaving us constantly hungry for the next exciting experience without fully appreciating what we've already consumed. This fast-paced culture of instant gratification, short attention spans and changing work dynamics has affected how we approach cinema and storytelling. Do you find yourself constantly seeking new entertainment and rarely taking the time to delve deeply into movies or the narratives they present? or have you noticed any changes in your viewing and reading habits compared to a few years ago when content consumption was less overwhelming? Japanese-to-English Audiovisual Translator | Subtitle/SDH Author | Game Localizer | Dad-Band Drummer
Welp, the 8th Crunchyroll Anime Awards came and went, and there are still no categories for best dub or subtitle translation... or any sort of translation. Surprised? Yeah, I'm not, either. Hmm... I wonder why? It couldn't be because they want to keep translators invisible and powerless, could it? Because if we had power and agency, they might have to actually pay us a living wage and provide decent working conditions. I speak with inside knowledge, as I worked with Funimation as a freelancer for about a year and a half until Crunchyroll acquired them. At that point, Crunchyroll "offered" me a 40% rate cut to the already meager Funimation rate. And the former 1-week turnaround time for each episode (usually about 24 minutes) was pared down to 1 to 3 days max. Even worse, we ALWAYS received a Japanese script at Funimation, but Crunchyroll said they couldn't guarantee that. https://lnkd.in/gXdNAc4U And recently, we learned that Crunchyroll will give AI-generated subtitles a go. Yikes! See the post by Nick Angiers 安仁良 here: https://lnkd.in/gnYqmRVm When I kicked Crunchyroll to the curb after they acquired Funimation, a fellow translator there told me not to burn any bridges, so I didn't burn them; I blew them up! Because, you know what? There is right and wrong in this world, and life is too short to brownnose, grovel, and hide your head in the sand. The truth is, I would've loved to keep working with Funimation in its new Crunchyroll incarnation but not under virtual sweatshop conditions. You can still find my work streaming there. I received many positive comments about my work while collaborating with Funimation. Plus, they were getting a great deal because my subtitle translations were also used as the basis for the dub scripts. At most companies, the dub and subtitle translations are entirely separate, which means paying two different translators. In the end, it was all about saving money. I wasn't worth it to them. In any case, please check out my work and see whether they are better off without me! Shadows House (Season 1) – My personal fav! As we become more engrossed in technology, with video becoming a dominant pathway of information, one way we receive our culture bites is through increasingly shorter and longer forms of content 📱 📺 🎬 In a world where time is a precious commodity, our content consumption habits reflect the pace of modern culture. Cinematic films are becoming epic marathons, offering immersive experiences that last for hours. Meanwhile, social media and news clips are like quick shots of information, delivering the essence of stories in mere seconds. It's fascinating how our attention spans adapt to these varying content lengths, mirroring our ever-changing way of life. What's your preferred method of digesting current culture: the cinematic saga or the swift newsbyte? 📽️ Apple, Paramount Pictures, Universal Pictures, @jackmacbarstool, @gordonramsayofficial, @serenaneel, @huddletime --------------- #svanyc #mastersinbranding #svamastersinbranding #svamib #schoolofvisualarts #sva #svabranding #branding #gradschool #mpsbranding #movies #content #instavideo #ContentEvolution #ModernCulture #ShortAndLong
