This morning, Council of the European Union experts from the Working Party on the Environment met ahead of the trilogue on the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR), scheduled for 4 March. Our position: 👉Minimum recycled content targets for plastic packaging put on the market in the EU must be met using post-consumer plastic packaging waste collected within the EU 👉A robust traceability system, verified by independent third-party, is needed to ensure that plastics labelled as recycled are actually recycled under equivalent conditions to those set in the EU. Without a mechanism to level the playing field for plastics recycled in the EU, the European packaging plastics recycling industry will struggle to remain competitive and expand its capacities within the EU. 💡🌿 Yesterday marked another crucial milestone in the EU's journey towards a circular future, as the European Parliament adopted its position on the new Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) with view to the upcoming Trilogue negotiations with the Council. 📦♻️ The PPWR proposal, initially unveiled by the European Commission in November 2022, aims to harmonize the fragmented packaging regulations across member states. By setting ambitious targets for companies and Member States, it focuses on reducing packaging waste and enhancing recyclability, prevention and reuse. 📈👥 For businesses, adapting to these changes means reassessing packaging strategies and investing in sustainable supply chain solutions. Together with the NGO community and Natural Mineral Waters Europe (NMWE), we call on #EU policymakers to provide a fair and preferential access right to food-grade recyclates in the proposal for an EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (#PPWR).   ✅ Priority access WILL:   ◾️ support industry in meeting its recycled content targets; ◾️ enable the closed-loop recycling of #packaging, whenever it makes sense and is technically feasible.   ❌ Priority access WON’T:   ◾️ restrict the EU market for plastic recyclates. With a system of priority access in place, recyclers will still be able to sell food-grade recycled materials at the relevant market price. This is already the case in Slovakia, where priority access has been successfully implemented, and will soon be introduced in Austria.   ◾️ stifle innovation or reduce incentives for recyclers to expand their recycling capacities.
