To conclude #Pride Month, our employees share their personal coming out stories and talk about how Quaker Houghton has inspired and empowered them to bring their true selves to work every day. Kelly McGrath, HR Operations Lead: “Growing up gay was never an issue in my family. I was raised in the Republic of Ireland, and while my family was very Catholic, they were also very accepting. Two of my mother’s five siblings are gay and have been out since the 1980’s, when it was still illegal to be gay in Ireland. And my family and friends were very active in the campaign to make Ireland the first country in the world to legalise same-sex marriage in 2015. In my professional life, reactions to my sexuality were less certain. There are very few global corporations in my hometown. Most businesses are family-owned. For this reason, I sometimes found it hard to bring my whole, authentic self to work. When I joined Quaker Houghton, I was cautious based on past experiences. But very quickly, I learned that the company acts according to its Core Values, namely Embrace Diversity and Act with Integrity. Finally, I felt like I could be myself in my professional life as well as my personal life.”

This is why we do the work! Even if it’s just that 1% more effort you need, it’s worth it for people to feel safe and connected to our workplace! Lily Zheng, a leader in DEI space, says it so well: “culture isn't event programming; it's what fills the space between them.” 🌱 Culture is how people treat each other when no one's looking. 🌱 Culture is how you respond to a crisis. 🌱 Culture is how you celebrate, but also how you grieve, mourn, learn, and process. 🌱 Culture is what you value and prioritise. 🌱 Culture is your shared identity and guiding compass. #everyonebelongs
"I came out to my manager 4 years ago, a month after I joined the Department of Primary Industries. Since then, I have always felt safe and included working in Biosecurity and Food Safety branch. The kind of work environment and culture my manager and her leader created, had enabled me to bring my full authentic self to work every day." For Wear it Purple Day this week on 25 August, Department of Regional NSW is launching a new Pride Inclusion Plan to ensure that staff identifying as LGBTQIA , like Tina Foo, feel safe and supported. Tina works as a Business Analyst within the Biosecurity and Food Safety Branch at the Department of Primary Industries. "Throughout the years, I had always thought of her as an LGBTQIA ally, from her actions and what she stands for. So, the fact that she announced her pledge to become an ally in front of the whole team this morning, in my mind, had changed her LGBTQIA ally commitment from 99% to 100%. Amazing stuff 🙂" "The more people leaders come out as LGBTQIA allies, the easier it is for us rainbow staff to come out in the workplace."

Yuisa Perez's sense of purpose goes back to high school. She had long felt othered, not least of which by the mispronunciation of her name. With over 20 years of passion as a Human Resources Leader, she realizes that life is about something bigger. Her mission begins with wanting to be a help to others and a purpose to bring inclusion and a sense of belonging wherever anybody may want to go. Some things to think about: 1️⃣ Simply creating policies and positions for DEI doesn’t work. The true work is really taking EVERYONE along for the journey and putting in the money and resources to do so. 2️⃣ You have to understand who you are to know your individual purpose - this comes through opportunities to learn and develop that sense of purpose. 3️⃣ Everyone has their own past experience - give your staff the permission to use that to do things differently. #PurposeFused #ConnectingWithPurpose #Culture Nell Derick Debevoise, Mark Griffin MBE, Neil Turnham

Global Lead Diversity, Inclusion & Belonging | Organization & culture development | Norsk Hydro | ex Management Consultant | NHH, Business & Finance | Certified Diversity Leader
Is It Safe to Be You? During a spring visit to Bergen, my 4-year-old daughter, Tiril, posed a question: “Mom, can children go to jail in this country?” I reassured her, “No, my dear, we’re still in Norway, where children are not imprisoned.” She then asked if adults could face jail time. I replied, “Yes, if someone commits a serious offense.” June marks Pride month, and I’m heartened by the widespread allyship and support from individuals, communities, and organizations toward the LGBTQI community. While it lasts only a month, it comes with a value commitment for the full year. Personally, I’ve never feared imprisonment due to my identity or faced discrimination based on whom I love. The idea of others merely “tolerating” my sexual orientation has never crossed my mind. But how can I truly understand the LGBTQI experience? I can’t. Yet I have a choice: to be an ally and celebrate - or be neutral and merely tolerate. I’ve invested time in learning and forming my own convictions. I celebrate Pride because I believe all people share equal value. We should celebrate one another, not merely tolerate each other. Everyone deserves to feel safe and be true to themselves, loving whom they love. In Norsk Hydro, we proudly embrace #Pride. Our understanding grows with each lesson, emphasizing its importance. This year, in collaboration with Amnesty International, our theme is “Safe With Us - Everyone is welcome in Hydro" — safe to express themselves and love whomever they love. No one should be excluded or face imprisonment for being true to themselves, whether in Bergen or any city worldwide. Happy Pride! 🏳️🌈🌈
We’re celebrating Pride at our locations around the globe throughout the month of June 🏳️🌈🎉🌈! Our Pride theme combines our focus on diversity, inclusion, and belonging, with our priority of safety in the workplace. “Safe with us” means physical and psychological safety—it means everyone is welcome to be their true self in our offices and plants.
