Each year like 2024 pushes renewable capacity far higher, squeezing out more expensive fossil fuel production. It’s hard to imagine a starker signal of the renewable era’s arrival than a near-total sweep of new power plant construction — now the clean energy industry just needs to keep it up.

Rapid Growth in Green Energy and EV Sales in the US: Is It Enough? The U.S. has achieved significant strides in its shift away from fossil fuels, as outlined in the Sustainable Energy in America Factbook 2024. This new report indicates that renewable energy in the country hit a record high last year, with wind, solar, and hydroelectric plants meeting nearly a quarter of the nation's power demand. Electric vehicle sales also reached unprecedented levels. Greenhouse gas emissions dropped to historic lows, reminiscent of the slowdown during the COVID-19 pandemic. The transition to clean energy is embedded in the U.S. economy, constituting 41% of zero-carbon power when including nuclear energy. Not long ago, people called wind, solar and batteries “alternative energy.” That old moniker has now lost its meaning: In 2024, the U.S. power industry is choosing clean energy for almost all its new capacity additions. This is a big year for power plant construction generally. The U.S. is slated to build 55% more power capacity than it did in 2023; the Energy Information Administration says the 62.8 gigawatts expected to be added in 2024 will be the most built in a year since 2003. We're proud of our client, Ontario Power Generation, and their commitment to clean, renewable energy. 👏 This summer, electricity demand hit its highest peak outside of the pandemic since 2013. Extreme weather combined with more people working from home, returning to school, and shorter daylight hours drove peak demand to 23,713 megawatts, the highest in 10 years. OPG invests in hydroelectric operations and other clean energy technologies, such as battery storage. OPG’s hydroelectric fleet demonstrated its value by generating 4,435 MW. The fleet also time-shifted generation to meet the increased demand, which means storing water overnight when demand is low and generating more electricity during the day when demand is high. This week's weather in Texas and other parts of the US will show that the journey towards energy transition is far from over. Despite the increasing use of renewables, including wind and solar energy, adverse weather conditions will cause lower-than-expected volumes of energy, resulting in the use of other sources like gas-fired generators. As we continue to face extreme weather conditions due to climate change, it's clear that a 100% renewable future is not yet achievable. We need to explore all technologies, including a significant drop in battery costs, the development of hydrogen networks, nuclear energy to fill in the baseload, and fuel cells for congested pockets. We also need to prioritize energy efficiency and maintain an advanced grid infrastructure to maintain balance. While natural gas will continue to play a role in the energy mix (sourced from wastewater, dairies, etc.), it's essential to remember that no single solution can solve this issue. All solutions need to be considered and have a seat at the table. Puget Sound Energy, the state’s largest utility provider, is facing a significant energy shortage by the end of the decade unless it finds more resources. One of its officials recently acknowledged the plan could initially include natural gas. According to a recent presentation to the Northwest Power and Conservation Council, PSE’s Vice President for Clean Energy Strategy and Planning Josh Jacobs said that the utility could have a 2,700 megawatt capacity shortage by 2030. Among the reasons for the energy shortage is a provision under the Clean Energy Transformation Act of 2019 prohibiting utilities from using electricity derived from coal-fire plants starting in 2025. According to Jacobs, it will represent a loss of 750 megawatts in electrical power moving forward that will need to be replaced with something else. Coal is among several energy sources, such as natural gas, that has been the target of efforts to “decarbonize” the state’s energy sector. While natural gas could be kept around to aid the transition away from carbon-emitting electricity sources, new houses may not be able to use it for cooking and heating if an updated building code currently under legal challenge is upheld.  https://lnkd.in/d6xD-irA

Great opportunity yesterday to spend a half hour talking Ontario energy yesterday on the Agenda on TVO with Steve Paikin. Thanks to Shannon A J., Keith Brooks, and Malini Giridhar for the lively discussion. To support affordability, reliability and a clean grid I suggested Ontario needs to move to an "Electrify Everything" (you can) approach and make natural gas a last resort. This can be successful through innovative and creative balancing of energy efficiency, Distributed Energy Resources, batteries, renewables and nuclear on increasingly smart grids. It isn't an overnight switch, but a change in approach that will require significant ambition and focus today, including the integration of planning for natural gas and electricity. Just last week Minister Todd Smith asked IESO to consider the next era of energy efficiency, demand response, and enhanced natural gas and electricity efficiency planning. And today Minister Steven Guilbeault issued a new draft design for the 2035 Clean Electricity Regulations that would allow more flexibility for grids to use natural gas as backup to support our increasingly clean grid.
