Late last year we continued our journey towards LGBTQ inclusion with the establishment of a new employee network. HI-VIS (Highlighting Inclusion and Diversity on Infrastructure Sites) is an employee-led initiative established to provide support and resources and promote LGBTQ inclusion and engagement in our work environments. Led by Co-Chairs Nathan Mete and Mitch Jones, with Dr James Glastonbury as our Executive Sponsor, we are committed to playing a role in proactively sponsoring greater inclusion for our LGBTQ community. An important part of this journey is becoming a member of Pride in Diversity, a not-for-profit employer support program for LGBTQ workplace inclusion specialising in HR, organisational change and workplace diversity. Pride in Diversity publishes the Australian Workplace Equality Index (AWEI), Australia’s national benchmarking instrument for LGBTQ workplace inclusion from which Top Employers for LGBTQ people is determined. Recognising and embracing diversity and inclusion in the workplace isn’t just a moral imperative; it's a strategic necessity. Not only can the elevation of diverse perspectives fuel innovation, creativity and act as core drivers of our collective success – it’s also the right thing to do. My favourite Transcom value is “we come as we are” In my life I’ve been told that I should develop a “corporate” personality to be successful. Keeping a corporate persona is exhausting when it’s not naturally who I am. So I didn’t take that advice. Developing two personas would be like splitting myself in two, or hiding a part of myself. Hiding who you are to “fit in” is not normal or healthy. And I don’t believe it’s a choice someone should have to make. Be proud, bold and fearless in who you are as a person. Take pride in yourself 24/7 /365 - no matter what your sexuality, gender, religious beliefs, neurodivergence or personality!
