Why architecture was better in the past To design something well, you really need to know how to make it first. When we sit behind our computers, choosing the 'blocks' that will look good in our 3D drawings, we often neglect the need to understand the working, making, and processes of the things we're adding to the design. Unfortunately, it's a somewhat lazy approach. While you may be able to bring your 3D drawing to life, what you won't create is any architectural value. In the past, people prioritized understanding how things were made before incorporating them into their designs. Their keen observation led to some of the most beautiful architectural works in the world. Architects knew what they were getting into. To truly 'be' an architect and not just be 'known' as one, they had to invest effort, choose the longer route, and understand the workings inside out. Today, despite having larger teams, advanced technology, and great comfort, we struggle to come anywhere close to what they created. They designed architecture for generations; we seem to settle for architecture that lasts for a decade.
