I’m as committed as the next person to the necessity of Equality, Diversity and Inclusion as mandatory to the fabric of a rich professional environment that fosters innovation. However, one thing has been bugging me of late. I believe there is still precious little in depth attention given to Diversity of Thought. It’s a no brainer that if a meeting is dominated by a noisy minority, you can have a fantastically diverse workforce but you are not getting diversity of thought. Research shows that in a typical six-person meeting, more than 60 per cent of the talking is done by two people. How many times have you sat in a meeting where you have zoned out because somebody is enjoying the airtime with little consideration for what you or other colleagues could be contributing? We have all been there. Diversity of Thought is critical. Next time you find yourself in this position, do consider that inclusivity is not sitting there in silence. It’s asking others in the (virtual) room what are their thoughts where everyone’s contributions are regarded as valued #EDI #DiversityofThought

Navigating Air Travel with Cerebral Palsy and a Stoma Air travel is a convenience and often a necessity for many, but for individuals like myself living with complex cerebral palsy, it can present significant challenges. I'd like to shed light on a particular issue I face that many might not be aware of. Due to my condition, I am unable to use the toilet on aircraft. This is further complicated by the fact that I use a stoma bag. On flights, I don't have the option to empty my stoma bag in an accessible restroom. Instead, I find myself faced with the unimaginable decision to empty it right at my seat. Additionally, my reliance on incontinence products for urine management only adds to the complexity of this issue. The lack of accessible facilities on airplanes is a real concern for individuals with disabilities. This isn't just about comfort; it's about dignity, health, and inclusivity. When we discuss accessibility and rights, it's crucial to remember that everyone's needs are unique. It's my hope that by sharing my experience, we can foster more understanding and ultimately drive positive changes in the aviation industry. Did you know that May is Military Appreciation Month? Or that May 14 is Hmong American Day? May 19 is World Day for Cultural Diversity! Would it be good to have a yearly calendar that lists more than just US holidays? Yes, a Multicultural Calendar for career development professionals has several purposes, increases allyship, and is expected to grow in the future. The new calendar, created by the Diversity Initiatives and Cultural Inclusion (DICI) committee, can be found on the NCDA Social Justice webpage in the Resources section of NCDA.org

I recently went through a recruitment process that blew me away with its commitment to inclusion. The company, which I'm thrilled to say is now my employer, prioritized accessibility from the very beginning. Here's why it was so impactful: ✔ Disability disclosure made easy: they collected information about hidden disabilities during the application, with the option to request reasonable adjustments right then. This took the pressure off me completely! ✔ A warm welcome: the receptionist greeted me by name and immediately offered assistance as she already had information about my visual impairment. ✔ Focus on my skills, not limitations: the interview task was printed in large font, ensuring I could participate fully. ✔ A question that mattered: the final question? "What does inclusion mean to you?" It showed they value diverse perspectives and creating a workplace where everyone feels seen. .  It's a reminder that #InclusiveRecruitment does not need to involve an overhaul of the whole process or costly investments, small gestures can make a real difference! #FeelingSeen #inclusion #recruiting #disability #accessibility P.S. Thinking of joining a company that values its people? An Australian survey of over 3000 employees (Inclusion@Work Index 2021-2022 - Diversity Council Australia (dca.org.au)) found that people who work in Inclusive teams are: - 11 times more likely to be highly effective that those in non inclusive teams - 10 times more likely to be innovative - 6 times more likely to provide excellent customer service - 4 times more likely to work extra hard - 10 times more likely to be very satisfied - 4 times less likely to leave their job in the next 12 months - 4 times less likely to feel work has a negative or very negative impact on their mental health - 5 times less likely to experience discrimination and/or harassment Jonathan Salter, the Global Head of Risk Consulting here at AXA XL, shared these statistics at his Town Hall last month, and it was so satisfying to hear. Not just because it's true and helps drive home the point that DEI initiatives can have a very positive effect on the BUSINESS of business. It's because the leader of my organization stated these things as something he believes in. I'm honored and privileged to work for an organization that supports and makes DEI a priority.
