Have you ever dislocated your shoulder halfway through and ultra race only to just complete it and win the race? Yeah, me neither. However, Kilian Jornet has. Kilian is a Spanish Ultramarathon athlete who not only wins like every single race he signs up for (notice how I’m never in the same race as him?), he has also started up his own running apparel company. His company NNormal focuses on the importance of the environment, avoiding the need to get stuck into the idea of fast fashion. We don’t need 10 pairs of running shoes, we can have one and just repair it when it breaks down. I love this about him. I love that he has a passion and has found a way to share it with the rest of the world. I love that he has a company dedicated to making a point in an activity (ultra/trail running) that is becoming ever more popular today. However, what I love the most is that he practices what he preaches. The article I share is his recent challenge. Yes it’s impressive, but what I love the most about it is that he cycled from trail to trail. He could’ve taken his own car, but he didn’t. He makes me think a lot about my own profession as an educator and outdoor adventurer. Things used to be different, wet weather protection wasn't what it is today, it used to be heavy, flappy, not really that breathable and often a last resort for riders. In 2010 Castelli changed that game! I remember watching the race (Kuurne-Brussels-Kuurne) and seeing Thor and others in the team with this jersey on. I immediately messaged Steve asking what was it, how much and when can I buy some (I was at Wiggle at the time). The race was incredibly wet and windy, with wheelie bins flying across the streets. Thor didn't win (he came 6th), that glory belong to Bobbie Traksel, but all I remember really from that day was the Cervelo Test Team using this high tech product. When we got them, we sold a lot, sometimes I think because I ordered plenty as my gut told me it was going to be big. But it was that freezing miserable 2013 edition of San Remo that changed everything for the Gabba. We had Pro Teams buying them off the site as we had stock. It was very common to see non sponsored teams attack the jacket with a sharpie so not to offend their actual sponsors by wearing the Gabba. But it was very distinctive and was an easy spot to the trained eye. I worked with Castelli on a Pro Issue version that came in a box with a sharpie. Many got the joke whereas we had Customer Service people relaying customer questions on what the difference was, and the reply came, just the pen. So today we see the new version of the Gabba R being launched. I'm always super excited to see new cycle clothing tech get launched. But unlike the previous 5 versions I'm unlikely to ever use this one. Why? Well this really is a race garment and in it's purest form is designed for that activity. I'm sure some may rebuff it, but I think that's the point, to move things forward, sometimes you've gotta cater for the niche. It's Paris~Roubaix this weekend, and I am sure that the riders of Soudal Quick Step might be praying for miserable conditions, as with the Gabba R they really will have an unfair advantage (check out the watt savings in their press release). #castelli #gabba #gabbar #parisroubaix #unfairadvantage

”Racing is life, everything else is just waiting” (Steve McQueen)… Which is really how I’ve how been feeling waiting 8 weeks for my 2nd race of the season, which took place yesterday at Brands Hatch. I’ve found more recently, however, that you’re never actually waiting, even if it does feel like a long stint between race meetings, because life is busy and action packed being a business owner and a mum. Each time a race weekend comes around, it almost feels like a weekend retreat for me doing something I love, so you can imagine how excited I was to have the opportunity to get back into racing after a 9 year hiatus! But it’s not ONLY for fun: 🔹 In 2022 we won our series and I won 4 trophies with the BWRDC and was awarded overall champion 🔹 In 2023 we won our class and I won 3 BWRDC trophies and received a GoldStar award! Test of my willpower and strength Our entire life, and our evolution in general, is about developing further and being prepared to go beyond physical and mental limits. There are hardly any physical challenges in my job, so it's important to test these too. The RACA 500 adventure starts for me in exactly two weeks' time, with around 540 km and over 10,000 metres of altitude to ride on my racing bike (Grossglockner with Edelweißspitze, Gerlospass, Kühthai, Hahntennjoch, Hochtannberg, Fontanella Faschina, etc.). However, this race should also serve as preparation, as I will be riding the Race Across Switzerland again in August, where both the distance and the metres in altitude have to be mastered with a factor of 2. All in all, it's about willpower, overcoming weaknesses, problem-solving skills and endurance. All factors that we also need in our normal lives and jobs. So I also see these adventures as a ‘free’ seminar in personal development. #Cycling

This is an interesting development in the rules governing professional cycling but as ever what will be more important will be how the rules are enforced in the TdF 2024 and beyond, particularly following some controversial decisions by the commissaires last year.
