Right now, you wouldn't know just by looking at this picture that there was a huge storm blowing through here 13 hours ago! Galveston’s got a wild history with hurricanes. Over the years, this beautiful island has faced some serious storms, each leaving its mark on our community. The 1900 hurricane was a real monster. It’s the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history, with 145 mph winds causing $30 million in damage back then (over $1 billion today!) and taking about 8,000 lives. Then there was Hurricane Carla in 1961, one of the strongest storms to hit Texas. With 175 mph winds, it caused around $2.3 billion in damage in today’s money. Hurricane Alicia hit in 1983 with 115 mph winds. This Category 3 storm caused about $2 billion in damage, hitting our homes, businesses, and local economy hard. More recently, in 2008, Hurricane Ike slammed into us as a Category 2 storm with 110 mph winds. The storm surge and flooding led to about $30 billion in property damage, making it one of the costliest hurricanes ever. Despite all this, Galveston’s community spirit and resilience always shine through. We keep rebuilding and strengthening our homes and infrastructure. Once upon a time, there was a hurricane that hit Florida and did some damage to a home owned by a lady named Cindy. Cindy owns an older home that is NOT built to meet today's building codes.
