Never forget, 911. It's Patriot Day. On Saturday night, I watched and listened to a speech by Manny Montanez (Purple Heart, Vietnam Vet) at the fundraiser called "Heroes Night Out," presented by HomeFrontAmerica.org. I have a copy of the speech notes (if you need a copy). But, here is what Mr. Montanez said about Patriotism. "It is said that patriotism is the love of a country. I think it is the love of the things about our country that we don’t want to see lost—that we want to see perpetuated—and we are willing to sacrifice to ensure it. Patriotism is not something you put on each morning like a clean shirt. Patriotism is not something you can buy at the supermarket. Patriotism is not something you can get in return for a monthly paycheck to a man or woman in uniform. It is devotion to an ideal—a principle; a burning desire that the things that people think are best for their country and its people are protected from erosion—protected from any and everything which would tend to lessen in the mind of the individual the image he has of how things should be in his ideal country. Patriotism is an abstract thing. You can’t see it, you can’t feel it, you can’t hear it—albeit at times you can see the action and hear the things that people do, who are imbued with patriotism. In the armed forces we have one fundamental mission—to provide for the security of this nation. Everything else is included in this goal. Good morning my lovelies. It’s Tied Up Tuesday. The final countdown is on to Christmas. Time to tie up loose ends and focus on you and your loved ones for the holiday season. Honoring Our Fallen Heroes: Memorial Day and Beyond As Memorial Day approaches, I want to highlight the often-overlooked stories behind the names we see on bridges, highways, and cemeteries. These are the names of our fallen veterans, and their stories are fading as the last survivors of WWII, Korea, and Vietnam pass on. My own ancestors served, and I grew up hearing incredible stories of bravery and sacrifice. It's a source of regret that I didn't preserve their words more carefully. We're losing precious first-hand accounts with every passing day. The recent news about the Francis Scott Key Bridge reminded me how little the younger generations may know about America’s past. Let's change that! This May, I'll be sharing stories of some of the places dedicated to fallen veterans. I hope this will inspire others to learn the history behind these names. Is there a national map or resource listing veteran-named highways and bridges? If you know of one, please share! May 2/31 Next time you're on US Highway 12, remember the sacrifices of the Iron Brigade! This Civil War unit, known for its black hats and bravery, suffered heavy losses at battles like Gettysburg. This portion of the highway is also dedicated to such battles as Second Bull Run and Antietam. I was fortunate enough to serve alongside USS Antietam (CG 54), third in name, for four deployments. Learning the history of the Battle of Antietam is well worth the read/viewing (in comments) for those who do not know of this historic battle. While the battle took place in Maryland, there are dedications to those that died in battle all along US Highway 12. As a former serviceman stationed at Fort Carson army base, I've personally witnessed the incredible dedication our troops bring to their roles. If we can train and equip a Service Member to defend our nation with unwavering dedication, surely we can arm them with the knowledge and tools to secure their financial futures. Recent findings about mold crises in Army barracks, particularly in establishments like those in Colorado Springs with its five strategic bases, underline the pressing need for improved housing conditions for our military . Beyond just remedying these conditions, it's paramount that we empower these heroes with knowledge and opportunities to build wealth through homeownership. The VA Loan remains an underutilized gem for many. By harnessing this and guiding them on the homeownership journey, we not only uplift their personal financial stature but also catalyze economic growth in communities, especially in regions like Colorado Springs which are deeply intertwined with military bases. Consider the profound impact: Service members in Colorado Springs buying, leasing, and selling real estate, driving community growth, and securing their piece of the American Dream. False Equivalencies & Veteran Non Profits Going back to Cameron Cushman’s post from last week (which clearly gave me a weeks worth of journaling) I noticed a disturbing trend - the lumping of all veteran non profits into one category, only to compare them against each other. You cannot compare the VFW to The Fallen Outdoors. Similarly, you cannot compare The American Legion to Project Healing Waters and Patrol Base Abbate. While there may be some overlap, in that all of these organizations seek to enhance the lives of veterans and military, they each have vastly different approaches in achieving this goal. Rather than seeking to compare apples to oranges, I would challenge everyone to consider the purpose of the organization they are critiquing? Are they meeting their goals? Are they, to steal a line from Courtney Steffen, pursuing their purpose? This is not a zero-sum game. The success of one organization is not the detriment of another. 📸: TFO, PHWFF, and PBA exist to get #veterans outside and teach them new skills, enabling them to find healing in nature. I personally recommend each org, they’re amazing and do incredible things for veterans. I caught my first catfish with TFO Team VA! The VFW has some of *the best* advocates I have ever known. Lesson? Doug Zembiec passed seventeen years ago. May 11th, 2007. Much has been written on his accomplishments, including how he earned the nickname "The Lion of Fallujah." All-American wrestler. Recon Marine. Completed numerous combat deployments. And received a Bronze Star and a Purple Heart. He's best known for the way he conducted himself in battle. Becoming a legend in the Marine Corps for his aggression and for placing the safety of his Marines in front of his own. In my opinion. The most remarkable thing about Doug is what happened in the days after Doug died. When Doug was laid to rest in Arlington, it was a designed as a closed ceremony, not open to the general public. Invitations were extended to Doug's family, his close friends, and any service member who served alongside him. When the day came, more than a thousand Marines showed up. Enlisted Marines who'd served under Doug's command. When asked by a local reporter, what had drawn such a crowd, a fellow officer said "Your men have to follow your orders, but they don't have to go to your funeral." Punch Line: The things we do, the metrics we achieve, they're all merely artifacts of the people we are. The way we show up in the world, for our teams, for our families, for each other - is and will always be what people care most about. Veterans Day isn’t just a celebration; it's a call to action. Veterans are our sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers, and sisters. Make a point this Veterans Day to honor their service by making a “buddy check” – reach out, be present and listen. Tragically, we're still losing veterans to suicide. The firearm industry is actively working with partner organizations (experts) and businesses to ensure responsible gun ownership, safe storage and accessible preventative resources. Seeking mental health treatment doesn't mean giving up Second Amendment rights; it can save lives.
