The Singapore International Water Week (SIWW) returns for the 10th edition from 18-22 June 💧 The biennial event brings over 20,000 experts and stakeholders from the global water industry to share knowledge and best practices to solve urban water and climate challenges. This year, a Coastal and Flood Resilience Cities Roundtable will be held for the first time, to address ways to deal with extreme weather patterns and rising sea levels faced by global cities. Watch this space for highlights of SIWW. Find out more at https://www.siww.com.sg/

Beijing's record rainfall and Maui's wildfires hold valuable lessons for Hong Kong. Extreme weather patterns, topography, and urbanization are all common factors between these seemingly distant extreme weather events. Hong Kong must invest in resilient infrastructure, nature-based solutions, and security risk assessments, and collaboration across the Greater Bay Area is crucial for effective disaster management. It's time to take urgent action, transform challenges into opportunities, and create a resilient urban landscape for future generations! #ClimateResilience #ClimateAction #ClimateTech #Resilience #ClimateRiskAnalytics #ClimateRisk #HongKong

Everytime monsoon season hits Malaysia, we are all put on high alert when continuous heavy rain events occur. Case in point, the recent urban flooding catastrophe impacting a shopping mall in Puchong. And to make it worse, climate change will only make these events more frequent and prevalent than ever. Therefore, climate adaptation and resiliency is extremely important. One of the more ingenious way to curb urban flooding is using the Sponge City concept using vegetation and greenery, retention ponds and permeable pathways to naturally absorb water runoffs. This will eventually also lead to enhanced biodiversity in the city, reduced urban heat island effect, massive reduction in embodied carbon (as opposed to using conventional concrete drains and storage tanks) and higher carbon sequestration in cities. It requires vast amount of land area and massive capital costs but if designed right, could be the best solution to combat urban flooding. Kudos to China (and so many other forward-thinking countries) on embarking on this ambitious project; perhaps we should strongly consider this Sponge City approach for our country.

China's Sponge Cities China is designing flood-resistant cities to mitigate the impact of extreme weather events. The video discusses how Chinese cities are incorporating features like sponge parks, permeable pavements, and underground water storage systems to better manage heavy rainfall and flooding. These nature-based solutions help absorb and store excess water, reducing the strain on traditional drainage infrastructure. By adopting a holistic approach to urban planning and leveraging green and blue spaces, Chinese cities are becoming more resilient to the growing threat of climate change-induced flooding.
