When we’re passionate about breaking down barriers for women in traditionally male dominated sectors, it’s easy to find ourselves despairing at the lack of progress. So I wanted to share a positive story! On Saturday, I picked my older daughter up from the Curious Minds National STEM camp in Canberra. This week long camp (and a concurrent camp in Adelaide) was the culmination of an amazing nine month program run by Australian Science Innovations, Australian Maths Trust, Australian Government Department of Education and The Australian National University. Over 100 young women from high schools across Australia have participated in two week long camps and six months of individual mentoring by volunteer female scientists, (with virtually no financial cost). They’ve done experiments, learnt about careers in STEM and met inspiring women STEM leaders, including Australia’s Chief Scientist Dr Cathy Foley. Hearing my daughter and her new friends’ excitement as they talk about future careers in STEM at the end of the program makes my heart sing for this next generation of young women. This program has been running for nine years and has inspired and supported hundreds of young women. I hope government will continue to fund and support it into the future. And in the meantime I thank all involved in the program (teachers, organisers, mentors) for giving their time and energy to help break down barriers for our young women in STEM. #womeninstem #superstarsofstem #education #mentoring #womeninscience #diversityinstem #futurescientists #genderequality

📖 Storytime with the Wonder Project 📖 🚀 The year was 2023 and the rōpū had just hit a huge milestone – they’d reached over 100,000 ākonga!   💸 Suddenly, they were met with a challenge – their biggest funder decided to stop investment in STEM promotion.  😔 If they didn’t act soon, hundreds of thousands of rangatahi would miss out on their impactful, inspiring STEM experiences. Something had to be done! 🤝 Alongside their existing partners, they set out on a mission to find like-minded businesses to support their kaupapa.  💙 Lucky for them, a hapori of organisations stepped up to help them make an impact in 2024. They were: ✨ Transpower New Zealand, Downer, Water New Zealand, Tonkin Taylor, EngNZ Foundation, Holmes Group NZ, Aroa Biosurgery Limited, WSP in New Zealand, Davis Ogilvie, Egis, Jacobs, McConnell Dowell and Tekton ✨ 🔥 With their help, the Wonder Project has reached over 24,000 ākonga in 845 classes across 464 schools in 2024 – representing 29% Māori and 11% Pacific Peoples and 27% high-barrier schools. 💡 Thanks to these ākonga-inspiring organisations, the future is looking bright for the Wonder rōpū. 🤗 They’re now getting ready for the mahi of 2025 – delivering their well-loved popular Rocket Challenge and Power Challenges in even more schools, and launching their new Water Challenge at full-scale. There are even whispers of another new challenge (shh it’s a secret…) 🌱 Their goal is to reach 30,000 ākonga, 20% ākonga Māori and 10% Pacific Peoples in 2025. And to make an impact of this scale, they’re going to need to grow their partner hapori. ❓ Will they reach their lofty 2025 goals? Will more organisations join them to inspire young Kiwis with STEM? I was so caught up in the daily grind. Putting out fires and chasing short-term gains, that I lost sight of why I started my business in the first place. I was stuck in the weeds, unable to see the forest for the trees. One day, I took a step back and asked myself, "What's the purpose of my company? What impact do I want to make in the world?" The answer was clear: I wanted to revolutionize my industry, to make a difference in people's lives, and to leave a lasting legacy. From that day forward, I made a conscious effort to focus on the bigger picture, to prioritize long-term vision over short-term gains. I started saying "no" to distractions and "yes" to opportunities that aligned with my purpose. It wasn't easy, but slowly, INOVTECH STEM CENTER started to transform. We started to innovate, to take risks, and to push boundaries. And you know what? We started to make a real impact. I learned that focusing on the bigger picture and long-term vision is not just a nice-to-have, it's a must-have for any leader who wants to make a meaningful difference in the world. Science and technology are transforming the world at an unprecedented pace. From addressing global challenges like pandemics and climate change to driving innovation and sustainable development, the role of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education has never been more crucial. The African continent holds a huge potential to transform its education sector and labour market through science, technology and innovation. That is the focus of the African Dialogue Series 2024 during the UN’s #AfricaMonth that UNESCO is contributing to. Our message is clear: The best investment in the future is to unlock the potential of STEM education across Africa. And African girls represent the greatest untapped population to become the next generation of STEM innovators. Today there are significant gender disparities in STEM education on the continent. Women constitute only 25 per cent or less of STEM graduates in higher education in many African countries. This underscores systemic barriers that hinder girls' participation and advancement in STEM disciplines. Addressing these barriers requires a multifaceted approach that challenges gendered attitudes, expectations, and biases. Together, we must tackle these issues, invest and work to create an enabling environment where girls and boys across Africa can access quality STEM education and realize their full potential. https://lnkd.in/dbBX3uvh #ADS2024
