#UpdateFromTheFrontlines: ICSC, represented by Director for Climate Policy Danica Marie Supnet, External Communications Manager Ira Dominique Guerrero, and Energy Campaigns and Advocacy Officer Niña Agustin, actively took part in the regional dialogue on decarbonizing the power sector in Southeast Asia and the meeting of the Southeast Asia #EnergyTransition Coalition (SETC) in Bali, Indonesia from August 26-29, 2024. Both activities were led by the Institute for Essential Services Reform (IESR). The regional dialogue, held from August 26-27, gathered stakeholders from government and civil society organizations across the region to tackle challenges and opportunities in moving away from fossil fuels and shifting towards #RenewableEnergy deployment and utilization in Southeast Asia. The event was co-organized with Climate Analytics and the Stanley Center for Peace and Security. It was followed by the strategic meeting of SETC, a collaboration among think tanks and civil society organizations in Malaysia, Singapore, Thailand, Cambodia, Philippines, and Indonesia, which was held from August 28-29. According to IESR Executive Director Fabby Tumiwa, SETC provides an opportunity for partner countries to join forces and strengthen efforts to advance the energy transition, contributing to more ambitious net-zero targets in the region. #Green and #lowcarbon development continues to be major policy focus in #China, as indicated by the 2024 Government Work Report, which puts #environmentalprotection as one of the government’s key missions in the year. The Hang Seng Shanghai-Shenzhen-Hong Kong Clean Energy Index (‘#HSSSHCE’) significantly outperformed the broader market since the beginning of March 2024, as sentiment on the sector was buoyed by supportive policies. We are proud to announce our new partnership with the Asian Development Bank (ADB) to finance up to $100 million of green trade in South and South-East Asia. South and South-East Asia are two of the most vulnerable regions to climate change. Enabling the development of more renewable energy capacity is essential to achieving the regions’ sustainability goals. Trade is a critical part of this as it enables the flow of green goods. However, many businesses currently lack access to the finance needed to trade these goods. This partnership will support these efforts by helping to meet the demand for longer-tenor finance for climate-related projects. The partnership will be managed through ADB’s Trade and Supply Chain Finance Program (TSCFP) and will focus on renewable energy, energy efficiency and climate-smart agriculture to support the region’s energy transition and climate resilience.
