Last month, PHI released our annual impact report focusing on some of the capacities we think are necessary for the coming opportunities and challenges in public health: centering community voices, generating evidence and moving it into action, and launching and scaling what works to address existing and emerging health issues. This report also serves as a call to action: an urge to prepare now for the critical public health issues that must be addressed. It serves as a compass: to steer us toward the necessary skills and expertise we need to address them, and to the places where we can learn, where we can dig in, and where we should evolve and take things to the next level. 🌐✨ Today marks the beginning of Global Public Health Week 2024, and we're thrilled to kick off with an incredible lineup! Throughout this week-long event, organized by the World Federation of Public Health Associations (WFPHA), we're bringing together institutions, communities, and public health leaders worldwide to celebrate the vital role of public health and its dedicated workforce. As the world continues to grapple with the COVID-19 pandemic, the importance of public health has never been more evident. Yet, the post-pandemic landscape poses new challenges, and it's crucial to maintain the momentum gained in recognizing the significance of public health. By making public health visible and accessible to all, we can better prepare for emergencies and strengthen our collective response to health challenges. Through knowledge-sharing, resource allocation, and addressing common barriers, we can empower public health professionals worldwide to make a difference in their communities. This year, Global Public Health Week focuses on the theme 𝐅𝐨𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐢𝐧𝐠 𝐏𝐞𝐚𝐜𝐞 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐏𝐫𝐞𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐬𝐢𝐭𝐞 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐄𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐭𝐚𝐛𝐥𝐞 𝐇𝐞𝐚𝐥𝐭𝐡, highlighting the interconnectedness of peace and health. This new study in #HSR from Mark D. Fleming PhD et al examine how a preexisting initiative to align health care, public health, and social services influenced COVID-19 pandemic response. WHAT IS KNOWN System alignment efforts aim to coordinate among health care, social service, and public health organizations to achieve common goals. WHAT THIS STUDY ADDS Investments in aligning systems can build capabilities within organizations and relationships between organizations. CONCLUSION Prior investments in aligning systems provided unanticipated benefits for organizational and community resilience during the COVID-19 pandemic. Our results illustrate a pathway for investment in system alignment efforts that build capacity within organizations and relationships between organizations to enhance resilience to crisis. Our findings suggest the usefulness of an integrated concept of organizational and community resilience that understands the resilience of systems of care as a vital resource for community resilience during crisis. What is public health? As part of our new UK Faculty of Public Health, strategic priorities, we are exploring the future of public health and how public health practice and policy continue to develop and evolve as we emerge from the acute phase of the COVID-19 pandemic. In support of these priorities, it’s been a privilege to be part of curating new resources, distinguished lectures and podcasts for our members and the wider public available on the FPH website: https://lnkd.in/e6ubv8UM I’ve also been keen to share my own thoughts on public health and recently had an opportunity to reflect on who we are and what we do in public health in the video below. Let me know your thoughts on how we can continue to raise the profile of this work, celebrate the public health workforce, and amplify our impact in improving health, saving lives and tackling health inequalities at home and around the world, every day. 🔗: https://lnkd.in/eE7zP33K #publichealth #publicpolicy #health #wellbeing #publichealthmatters #publichealthjobs #publichealtheducation

Violence Prevention Programme Lead, World Health Organization Collaborating Centre, Public Health Wales
Excellent overview of public health from Kevin Fenton CBE FFPH FRCP PhD. In taking a public health approach to violence prevention, we are addressing the social determinants of health - ensuring that people are safe and that we prevent trauma and injury. To do this, we can work with individuals to change behaviour, but we must also work to promote healthy relationships, address harmful social norms, conditions and power structures which perpetuate violence.
