Executive Director, One Mind at Work | Driving change and helping organizations share their stories on how they’re implementing a gold standard for workplace mental health and wellbeing.
Did you know that higher temperatures have been found to increase suicide rates? Over the longer term, #climatechange worsens chronic diseases, such as respiratory, heart, and pest-and food-related diseases. And there’s widespread climate anxiety, particularly among young people, people of color, women, and those in low- and middle-income countries. This is why corporate climate commitments must include #mentalhealth

Fantastic insights from the World Health Organization: "While no one is safe from these risks, the people whose health is being harmed first and worst by the climate crisis are the people who contribute least to its causes, and who are least able to protect themselves and their families against it – people in low-income and disadvantaged countries and communities." Climate change poses an existential threat to global health, but it disproportionately affects the most vulnerable, demanding greater care and collaboration. #ClimateChange #Sustainability #ClimateCrisis #GlobalHealth

Climate crisis is a health crisis, and we need to act urgently to build a climate-resilient health system. Our latest primer on the "Effect of Climate Change on Public Health" highlights the wide-ranging implications for environmental and human well-being. Climate change poses significant threats to human health due to direct and indirect impacts like degraded air quality that exacerbate respiratory ailments. Rising temperatures and intensified extreme weather events heighten the risks of heat-related illnesses, injuries, and population displacement. 🌏 Highlighting New Research on Climate Change and Public Health in Australia I recently came across a compelling study in the Lancet by some esteemed colleagues addressing a topic of critical importance: the impact of climate change on public health in Australia. 🔥🌊 The research meticulously maps out the spatiotemporal trends of environmental extremes like heatwaves, wildfires, floods, and droughts over the past two decades. The findings are a wake-up call, underscoring the profound effects these climate challenges have on the health and well-being of Australians. While there have been adaptation strategies at national, state/territory, and local levels, this study reveals that our response to the climate crisis needs more urgency and consistency, especially in light of the political, public, and global factors at play. 🌱 Key Insights: • The health impacts from climate-related extremes in Australia are significant and far-reaching. • Current governmental strategies, though present, require strengthening and concrete action. • It’s crucial to include Indigenous Australians in these adaptation efforts. 🤝 A Call to Action: This research advocates for a unified and comprehensive approach. We need collaboration across all levels of government and communities to effectively address and adapt to the health impacts of climate change (Including the mental health impacts! Beyond Blue Climate Council) Congratulations- this is such important work, and fantastic that it's focused on Australia specifically. #ClimateChange #PublicHealth #Australia #ClimateAction #Sustainability

Health and Climate Change: A Critical Nexus The escalating effects of climate change pose a significant threat to public health, impacting us through both direct and indirect pathways. Direct Effects: Extreme weather events, including heatwaves and storms, are becoming more frequent and severe, leading to increased heat-related illnesses and a higher incidence of respiratory conditions due to air pollution. Additionally, shifting climates are enabling disease-carrying vectors like mosquitoes to expand into new areas, introducing diseases such as malaria and dengue to new populations. Indirect Effects: Climate change undermines food security by affecting crop yields, which increases the risk of malnutrition and related health issues. Mental health is also affected, as anxiety and distress over climate change and its disasters contribute to psychological conditions including depression and PTSD. Action is Essential: Tackling these health challenges requires a comprehensive approach that includes reducing emissions, bolstering public health systems, and ensuring food security. Moreover, individual and community actions towards sustainable practices and support for climate-conscious policies can make a significant difference. In essence, combating the health impacts of climate change is about safeguarding a livable future. By acknowledging and acting on the intricate connections between our planet's health and our own, we pave the way for a healthier, more resilient world! 😎 #ClimateChangeAndHealth #GlobalHealth #SustainableLiving #EcoHealth #PublicHealth #ClimateCrisis #EnvironmentalHealth #GreenFuture #HealthyPlanetHealthyPeople #ClimateAwareness #ActOnClimate #EcoAnxiety
