We were delighted to welcome Dr Jörg Duschmalé, a board member of Roche, Karger Publishers, and PolG Foundation to our recent High Performance Boards program at IMD. As a member of Roche's founding family and with a business history spanning 128 years, Dr Duschmalé's journey in the company began in the laboratory. He emphasised the unique perspective he brings to the boardroom as a scientist and chemist, stating, "As a board member, I can contribute in unique ways. With my background in R&D, I have an intimate understanding of the challenges we face." In today's increasingly challenging business environment, Dr Duschmalé acknowledges that the governance structure of family businesses like Roche offers an advantage by fostering a long-term view for future generations. However, he also presents his own perspective. “I always think if family ownership works and if it is a competitive advantage. If it does not work, it really does not work. Looking at the journey of my own family over 128 years it was not always a straight-line success story. There were difficulties, but the key lies in the family's agreement that what benefits the company ultimately benefits the family.
