This year marks the 4th annual Black Liberation In Higher Education Teach-In, spotlighting and uplifting Black intellectual practice. Shifting away from a day of service on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, we've cultivated the Teach-In space.
On MLK Jr. Day, CoREJ advocates for Black people to prioritize rest.
Reflecting on the rich history of Black contributions across the Diaspora, we acknowledge that our skilled labor and intellectual achievements have transformed cultures and liberated communities worldwide. Approaching the 2024 Black Liberation Teach-In, we reflect on MLK Jr.'s legacy, particularly his 1961 speech at an AFL-CIO convention, emphasizing the vital connection between civil rights and the labor movement.
"Negroes are almost entirely a working people," Dr. King stated in 1961. "Our needs are identical with labor's needs — decent wages, fair working conditions, livable housing, old age security, health and welfare measures, conditions in which families can grow, have education for their children, and respect in the community."
Given our history as working people, we advocate for Black people to rest, especially on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, when demands for free labor escalated under the guise of the greater good. In the cogent words of Tricia Hersey, founder of the Nap Ministry – "rest is resistance." ✊🏿 ✨
