Lights out and away we go! As LinkedIn becomes a more happening place, one might wonder why in the world would I post about the results of an F1 team? I can readily admit that over the last few years, I've become something of an F1 fanatic. Yes, the stories and the drivers bring so much to the table, but for me, it's about the fact that the foundation of the sport is steep in data, strategy, know-how, grit, and the drive to never give up, because quite frankly, anything can happen. And for me, this is exactly what it feels like working in digital strategy and social media. Examples of how I make this connection? Track temperature/weather = ever-changing algorithms Tire performance or degradation = ever-changing functionality of platforms DRS = catching a high when content performs well, or ideas come to fruition Electronics and equipment = all the tools to help us do our jobs Power unit = people* Sometimes we get it right, sometimes we don't. Sometimes we can have home run quality content and the data to back us up on how to proceed, and then it goes nowhere. It's a marathon and not a sprint. We take the good with the bad, run the numbers, look at the landscape, and bring the same amount of effort week after week trying to chase the ever-elusive dream of consistently (increasing) solid performance. There might only be two more races to go in the F1 season, but the work will carry on as teams build towards a better 2024. May the force be with us all as we close out 2023 and set new strategies and goals for 2024. 🐣 *Note: George Russell had to retire his car yesterday before the race was finished due to an overheating power unit. The concern here is that if the power unit reaches a critical threshold, it can essentially blow up (literally/figuratively). I liken the power unit to people because people are at the heart of making this digital landscape work, and it's imperative that those working in social media remember to look after themselves as well, for their mental and physical health depend on it!

Despite the comfortable win for Verstappen and Red Bull Racing & Red Bull Technology, yesterday's Formula 1 Grand Prix saw some interesting strategies taking place as a result of an early safety car. Most notably the MoneyGram Haas F1 Team using Kevin Magnussen to slow down the pack of cars behind in order to build a pit window for Nico Hulkenberg, ultimately earning their first point of the season. In the gapper plot below it is observed between laps 21 and 33 the extreme pace drop-off for the cars behind Magnussen, while from lap 39 onward he was able to open a comfortable gap. The team would have used live updating vertical slices of a gapper plot similar to the one shown below to identify if a suitable pit stop window was present, with a typical anticipated stop time between 20 and 25 seconds depending on the circuit. Further strategic battles between McLaren Racing and Lewis Hamilton took place throughout the GP, with Lando Norris matching the pace of Hamilton during their long opening stint on the Medium tyre, and covering off the undercut by responding immediately to the lap 36 pit stop from Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team.
