Today is the first day of Black History Month 2024. This month represents an amplified opportunity for all people to honor, celebrate and reflect upon the achievements, struggles, accomplishments, experiences and lives of Black Americans, past and present. Today, as we work towards a society that is more just, equitable, and historically aware, I encourage each of us to give thanks for and uplift the Black Americans who we have learned from, worked with, been mentored by, been supported by, done business with, partnered with, and loved. We are also challenged to redouble our efforts to have the history, story and achievements of Black Americans treated as the essential American history that it is… core to who we have been, an essential part of who we are today, and an essential element of who we shall be in the future as Americans. #BlackHistoryIsAmericanHistory #BlackLivesMatter #CelebrateBlackExcellence

February is Black History Month, an annual celebration of the many contributions and achievements of Black and African American people in the United States. We recognize and uplift those who are multiply marginalized, including Black individuals with disabilities. There have been many Black leaders throughout history, like Harriet Tubman and Audre Lorde, whose disabilities have shaped their experiences and contributions. Today marks the first day of Black History Month. Recognizing and celebrating both the historical and current contributions of Black People in our communities, and in the FDR field, is something we must aspire to do every day. We must be intentional about creating space for Black voices and amplifying the experiences of the individuals we work with and the families that we serve. By doing this, we not only deepen our understanding of one another, but we create greater opportunity for connection and collective growth. Black History Month allows us an opportunity to pause, reflect, learn, unlearn and expand our knowledge of what it means to move toward a just and equitable society. This month FDRIO will be hosting a unique and important in-person workshop - Attuned: Practical Ways of Embracing Diversity in Professional Settings & Everyday Life. This workshop hosted in downtown Toronto is a practical DEI training that breaks down the compexities of racialized trauma in a relatable way. Topics include: - Developing Relational Attunement - Understanding the 4 F's (fight, flight, freeze, and fawn trauma responses) - Understanding Collective Trauma Learn more and register now: https://lnkd.in/g9XmTA_x *EVENT IS POST-PONED*

As we step into Black History Month, let's celebrate the immeasurable impact of Black excellence across every sphere of society. From the inventive genius of Garrett Morgan, who gifted us the traffic light, to the poetic prowess of Maya Angelou, whose words traverse the landscape of the human soul, the contributions of Black individuals have been both profound and transformative. Innovation in science and technology, spirited narratives in arts and literature, groundbreaking achievements in sports, and pioneering leadership in business—each domain is rich with stories of resilience, creativity, and perseverance. Figures like George Washington Carver, Serena Williams, and Madam C.J. Walker are not just icons of Black history; they are pillars of our collective human journey. This month let's not only reflect on the past achievements but also ignite conversations about inclusivity, equality, and the ongoing contributions of Black professionals in our industries. Their legacy is a beacon that lights our way forward, reminding us that our strength lies in diversity, our progress in unity. #BlackHistoryMonth #DiversityInIndustry #Innovation #Resilience #Excellence

Black History Month is a time to spotlight and celebrate the honorable contributions, achievements, and culture of Black Americans and their communities. However, these efforts should be applied year-round. Fortunately, at DeVry, we can lean into our business resource groups, including the Association of Black Colleagues (ABC), to enable continuous learning by going deeper into discussions and making meaningful connections. From my perspective, as a collective – organizations, businesses, and society as a whole – can acknowledge and support the significance of Black History beyond the month of February. #BlackHistoryMonth Learn more here: https://devry.ly/3T3PCcn

🌟 Black History Month invites us to embrace not only the extraordinary achievements of notable Black figures but also to recognize and celebrate the everyday lives and contributions of Black individuals. It’s a time to reflect on the societal expectations placed on people of color—that to be acknowledged, one must be exceptional in some way. This month, let’s challenge that narrative and affirm that being oneself, in all aspects of life, is inherently valuable and worthy of celebration. Notable figures like Maya Angelou, Martin Luther King Jr., Rosa Parks, and James Baldwin have left indelible marks on our history and culture. However, the strength and essence of the Black community also lie in its teachers, nurses, artists, parents, and all those who contribute to the richness of our shared society by simply being themselves. As we engage in Black History Month, let’s commit to recognizing and valuing the diverse contributions of the Black community, not as exceptions but as integral parts of the tapestry of our collective history. It’s an opportunity to affirm that excellence comes in countless forms and that every individual, regardless of their background, enriches our community simply by being part of it. Here’s to a month of meaningful reflection, celebration, and a renewed commitment to inclusivity and understanding. #BlackHistoryMonth #CelebrateEveryStory #InclusiveExcellence #EverydayExcellence
