Mangroves are nature's superheroes, with remarkable benefits for our planet. 🛡️ Guardians of the coast: They protect our coastlines from sea level rise, tsunamis, and hurricanes. 🌍 Carbon champions: Mangroves can store three to five times more carbon than tropical rainforests. 🐠 Marine nurseries: They serve as nursery grounds for fish, prawns, crabs, and other marine life. 🏪 Supermarkets of the sea: Local communities rely on mangroves for a variety of products. In the heart of Kuantan, a battle is unfolding—one that pits the pristine beauty and ecological significance of our mangroves and coral reefs against the tides of a mega coastal reclamation project. As ChasingKarang Alliance, we stand resolute in our mission to defend these voiceless treasures of nature. Mangroves serve as nature's frontline defense, protecting our coastlines from erosion, storm surges, and providing crucial habitats for countless species. Estuaries are nurseries for marine life, nurturing young fish and invertebrates that are the backbone of our local fisheries. Coral reefs, often called the rainforests of the sea, support a quarter of all marine species, offering biodiversity that is both breathtaking and indispensable. The proposed reclamation project threatens to obliterate these ecosystems, replacing nature's wonders with concrete and steel. Such development not only endangers biodiversity but also undermines the livelihoods of local communities dependent on fishing and tourism. What is illipe butter and how can it save the ancient rainforests of Borneo? Borneo is currently ground zero for oil-palm devastation with Malaysia and Indonesia supplying about 87% of the world’s palm oil. The transformation of forests into agricultural land is a major driver of deforestation and contributes significantly to three of the most severe threats to biodiversity: 👉the destruction of natural habitats 👉the degradation of land quality, and 👉the fragmentation of ecosystems. SFi members recently heard from a social enterprise in the growth phase championing a nature-based alternative to palm-oil: illipe. The Illipe tree is native to Borneo and the nut is wild harvested as a non-timber forest product by the local communities. Conservation initiatives are under pressure, particularly due to the persistent influx of substantial capital driving deforestation. As a result, innovative nature-based approaches have become crucial for safeguarding and maintaining the rainforests on the world's third-largest island. IAR's partners in Indonesia, YIARI, work with local communities to restore mangrove habitats. This sustainable, community-supported initiative not only enhances local biodiversity but also bolsters the ecosystem’s resilience against extreme weather events. Thanks to the dedication and involvement of local people, YIARI's initiative has achieved a remarkable seedling survival rate, highlighting the effectiveness of their restoration efforts. By engaging local communities, YIARI ensures that the restoration efforts are inclusive and beneficial to the people who depend on these vital ecosystems. The collective effort not only protects the environment but also supports local livelihoods and fosters a deeper connection between people and nature. Here are a few reasons why Mangroves are superheroes: 🌊 Coastal Protectors: Mangroves act as natural barriers, shielding shorelines and communities from storms and erosion. 🦜 Biodiversity Hotspots: These ecosystems host a diverse range of species, providing habitats for fish, birds, and numerous other wildlife, including the proboscis monkey. 🌍 Carbon Sinks: Mangroves efficiently absorb and store carbon dioxide, helping to fight climate change. 🐟 Nurseries of the Sea: Many marine species, including key fish, spend part of their lives in mangroves. 💧 Water Purifiers: Mangroves filter pollutants from water, improving water quality and supporting marine life. Approximately 500 million people worldwide depend on coral reefs for food, income, and coastline protection. 🌊 Coral reefs are vital to the health of our oceans, providing habitat for about 25% of all marine species. Unfortunately, these vibrant ecosystems face numerous threats, including climate change, pollution, overfishing, and destructive fishing practices. To protect coral reefs, conservation and restoration methods are essential. Conservation focuses on safeguarding reefs through measures like Marine Protected Areas (MPAs), which limit harmful human activities. Restoration involves active efforts to rehabilitate damaged reefs, such as coral gardening and creating artificial reefs. 🎣 Through our MPAs, we are protecting coral reefs from threats like illegal and unsustainable fishing. Our efforts ensure that these ecosystems remain resilient and continue to thrive. In Banggai, Indonesia, we are also working on coral restoration projects within our MPAs. These projects involve planting coral fragments on degraded reefs, promoting natural recovery, and enhancing biodiversity. 🌏 In the MPA Banggai Area 7, within the tourism subzone, some corals have been damaged due to human activities such as anchoring, coastal infrastructure, and waste. These areas are closely monitored, and we're seeing some increase in the size of the corals to measure the success rate. We use the spider web method to restore species such as Acropora mucronata, Acropora digitifera, and Acropora hyacinthus.
