You have to first look at the legal basis: what the EU has decided over our heads, what of it is already valid in Austria and what needs to be implemented. #GetSerious ! Latest take in Euractiv: the costs associated to climate change dwarf not only the costs of inaction, but also the costs of mitigation measures ! In short, it is already cheaper to save the planet than to ruin it. To limit the just transition to an economic exercise that will leave us globally poorer is a gross misconception of the issues at stake. As Philippe Lamberts puts it: we need to get serious ! We must now act collectively to keep these associated costs from skyrocketing beyond the capacities of public (states) and private (insurances) actors. They are currently vastly higher than the revenues generated from taxes and other economic instruments addressing environmentally harmful activities for all pollutants, in all Member States and across all sectors of the economy. But solutions do exist ! ➡ There is clearly scope to apply the polluter pays principle more rigorously through environmental taxation and extended carbon pricing frameworks in the EU as they provide financial incentives for stakeholders to adopt more climate-friendly practices, including in sectors fraught with social and economic challenges like #agriculture. The European Environment Agency will publish in the coming months the first-ever European Climate Risk Assessment (EUCRA) to further document these costs of inaction and inform sound climate policy-making. #climatechange #climaterisk #climate #environment #economy #polluterpay

📢 Excited to share my latest research published in Energy & Environment! 🌍 The United States is classified as “insufficient” by the climate action tracker (CAT), highlighting the urgent need for improved policy measures to achieve Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 13. 🔍 In our study, we examine the impact of public climate attention, financial regulations, and energy policy uncertainty on the load capacity factor in the US from 2004 to 2021 using a unique bootstrap rolling window Granger causality test. 📈 Key findings: Increased public climate attention and financial regulations positively affect the load capacity factor, enhancing environmental quality. Increased energy policy uncertainty negatively impacts the load capacity factor, leading to environmental degradation. A back-of-the envelope calculation in a new Grantham Research Institute on Climate Change & the Environment report (below) suggest that the average economic cost to publicly-listed firms that lose #climatelitigation cases is $360 million. A drop in the ocean compared to recent profits of companies such as #Shell and #BP (although excludes intangible costs to #brandreputation)... However, as this Reuters piece shows, a rising new norm is for citizens to sue governments for inaction on #climate as a violation of their human rights.
