This new study in #HSR from Jessy Nguyen and Prachi Sanghavi, PhD, compares level 1 and 2 trauma centers with similarly sized non-trauma centers on survival after major trauma among older adults. What is known: Trauma experts have had a long-standing concern about inadequate limits on trauma center designations, which may affect hospital volumes and allow entry of lower quality facilities. What this study adds: 100% of 2012–2017 #medicare beneficiaries and propensity-score-based balancing weights to compare outcomes after care at trauma centers versus non-trauma centers. Conclusion: Trauma centers may not provide longer survival than similarly sized non-trauma hospitals for severely injured older adults. At To Whom I May Concern®, we often refer to Sharing Groups. What is a Sharing Group? A Sharing Group is a group of people diagnosed with dementia who want to share their experiences with one another. It can be started by inviting people from a senior’s center, faith community, local doctors, neurologists, or memory clinics, or may already be an existing support group. Working with a TWIMC Facilitator, Sharing Groups may choose to co-produce a readers-style To Whom I May Concern® performance and perform it before community audiences. To start a Sharing Group, look into becoming a Certified TWIMC Facilitator. https://lnkd.in/d7tpdma

Don't miss Melissa J. Hogan's session on Medical Trauma at the Cure GM1 Hybrid Conference! Medical trauma involves the negative emotional and physiological responses to medical care that a patient perceives as scary or threatening. The risk for medical trauma increases due to many factors, one of which is more frequent interaction with the medical system, something often unavoidable with rare diseases. Medical trauma can also affect caregivers, siblings, and others impacted by a loved one’s condition and/or care. This session will educate families on medical trauma, how to recognize it and distinguish it from other symptoms, as well as empower them with strategies to help prevent and manage medical anxiety and trauma in their loved ones and themselves. Additional background can be found in Hogan’s 2021 book, “Afraid of the Doctor: Every Parent’s Guide to Preventing and Managing Medical Trauma.” AGENDA: https://lnkd.in/gdFVE72f REGISTER: https://lnkd.in/dwg_Fq6V #curegm1 #hope #raredisease #engage #connect #community #advocacy #nevergiveup

“How to Get Your Affairs in Order” – Online – Thursday, December 14, 2023 (2 pm – 3:30 pm central time) This program will provide suggestions for when a doctor says it’s time to “get your affairs in order.” We will examine a checklist for the dying and how many of the items on such a checklist can be done years before a diagnosis. Upon completion of this program, the participant will be able to: ∙ Understand how planning for the end of life leads to a better death someday and a better life right now. ∙ Recognize the importance of making plans, writing them down, and sharing them with others. ∙ Identify actions that reduce fears and anxiety. ∙ Recognize the ways that death doulas, care teams, elder care attorneys, and loved ones help support people at the end of life. The link will be emailed to you before the session. This is available for 1.5 CEUs through the Continuing Education Institute of Illinois. I’d also welcome caregivers, patients, and curious participants. Please join us! Each session also includes an “Ask a Doula” Q&A at the end where I’ll answer all your questions.
