Journaling can be a great thing for dealing with negative body image. The summer is a time when many people experience a heightened sense of focus on their bodies. Journaling can help reflect and identify those thoughts, where they’re coming from, and how to process them. It can also help identify whether the actions you are engaging in align with your values. So, here are 3 journal prompts to get you started: Imagine you were completely comfortable in your body. What activities would you engage in this summer, and how would doing those make you feel? How does clothing affect your body image? Reflect on two outfits--one that you feel very confident in and one that you don’t. What affects your confidence? Reflect on the media/images you consume in a day or week. How do these make you feel? Do they encourage or discourage you from acting based on your values?

When eating disorder thoughts occupy our brain, we have less space in our minds for things that truly matter, such as our family, friends, school, work, and other activities and meaningful interests. In our diet-obsessed culture, you probably hear blame and judgment associated with binge eating all the time. But in reality, binge eating disorder is a complex brain disorder with neurological, biological, genetic, and environmental causes. Just like any other physical or mental health condition, it’s not an issue that can be resolved with self-control, ‘willpower’, or sheer force.
