I was recently doing some customer diligence calls on a new investment when a customer brought up a competitor I wasn’t considering. After digging deeper didn’t help, I brought it up with our portfolio company’s CEO. In that conversation, he and I figured out how and why the competitor was successful — but we also discovered that the newer startup was operating in a totally different (and potentially more interesting) category altogether. From there, we could get ahead of marketing and product challenges and build a smarter pricing strategy.
